Yet another A/C post! I have a minor leak. Had to charge system up a couple years ago, and I noticed it struggling again last week.

Had the same company out to recharge it as last time. I have sticker shock... I think it was $200 last time, but this time they charged me $460 for a 20 min visit.. Hosed the unit down and added 5 lbs of R410A. It was saturday afternoon.. No indication that was extra.

$275 for refrigerant.. $229 for visit.

How bad have I been screwed?

5 pounds of refrigerant is not a minor leak. Sounds as though the leak(s) has gotten worst in the past 2 years. How old is the unit?

The charge for 5 lbs of R-410A sounds reasonable - I believe it has increased in cost significantly in the past year. Labor - well weekend service, etc.

Yeah you probably need a new unit. I would see if the 5 lbs gets you through the next month comfortably and reassess in the winter. I had mine charged up 3 years ago and it made it through that summer and last summer. Last fall the unit died. Wouldn’t come on. So for $400 or so I got two more years out of it and replaced it with a new 4 ton unit for $7k last October. Wish I had pulled the trigger sooner. This one is so much more efficient and keeps my house below 70 even when it is in the upper 90s here. Of course I was going from R22 to R410.

The unit was put in when the house was built in 2008.

Thanks for the responses.. I guess I will see how long this one lasts.

if they added that much it wont last the night and you'll wake up sweating

thats a HUGE leak, most systems only hold 7-8 lbs of freon total

they screwing you and they didnt find and fix the leak so they can come back in a week or two and try to sell you a new unit

Did they discuss the leak? They are closed systems so shouldn’t leak. That’s not true that a leak means a system needs replaced, in fact it very rarely does unless you can’t get the parts or it’s more to fix then to replace. Most people just don’t like to spend money on parts and would rather replace, big difference though.

But the AC company should have either fixed the leak and told you where it was or had a plan to fix it. Some weekend service calls they just get it back cooling, then will come back to repair it later.

I think mine is stated to hold 10 lbs, but he said it usually will take more than that.

Not sure why everyone is saying "huge" leak. A loss of 5 lbs from a pressurized system over 2 years? Significant, sure. But a huge leak would be hours or days until depressure, in my mind at least.

We discussed the leak. He said likely in the evaporator. He said not fixable- $3500 for a new bundle. Why is the evaporator the likely location? That's the low pressure point, isn't it? I would think downstream of compressor more likely. I guess tube config?

It's a furnace/AC combo in the attic and last time I looked I couldn't even figure out how to get to the tubes.

Interesting. He didn't think fixing leak was an option.
