What do people do to prevent this, just buy a new one every 3 years as a preventative?
I started doing this about 15 years ago on the advice of my auto shop owner. Never have I had an issue with a dead or weak battery since doing this - just swap it out at 3 years. Average life of an auto battery in the Deep South is 38 months. $120 battery, prorated $40 a year, ……. 3/4 tank of gasoline, “cheap” meal for you and the SO, ……why deal with the aggravation - how often does a battery “die” in your driveway…..

Had the battery and alternator tested - both good. So who knows. Since I posted this, I've tried to observe a pattern, but none. It'll start sluggish (the usual) on first start in the morning, but then after driving for 45 minutes it'll crank so slow I think it's not gonna start, but it pulls it off. I've started it, run for 10 seconds, kill the engine, and then on the 2nd start it fires up quicker. It hasn't failed to start once. It's just weird how slow it turns over while doing so.
So I might do this next. When it's cooler this weekend.

Crawl under the truck and check the connection where the battery cable attaches to the block/starter. I've seen many of those get loose and cause the problem you're having

Replace starter. A family member’s 2019-ish Yukon starter was dragging just like you describe.
