Why do images turn into links after a few months?

I'm sure it has something to do with saving server space or helping the site run faster. I do wish the image to link period was longer though

I’m pretty sure all images here are hotlinked, which means that when they are viewed here, the servers on which they’re hosted (not TD servers) have to process the request.

Because of a lawsuit (frivolous) brought by some random law firm that went after a bunch of forums a few years ago for having copyrighted photos posted with the owners “taking no action”. #ripaaronb23
