You're feeding the troll with this thread. I don't think admins can see or change anything with upvotes/downvotes anyway, except maybe Chicken or Circus Child.

Anonymous upvotes and downvotes are a very good way of getting a consensus opinion on threads and the subject matter in the OP.
Stickied thread on the rant still has hundreds of upvotes in good solidarity with Sid and his family. And that's next to a the measly little number of down votes that hasn't gotten past 5 yet. That's a pretty damn good consensus opinion.
With votes being visible, you take that away that pretty good measuring stick because visible votes will now be another topic of discussion and distract threads to the point they're off topic.

There is Internet silliness and then there is real life with real emotions and back story
Anyone that has any modicum of decency knows better than to do what he/she/they did in that memorial.
I would hope that the powers that be do not want such "contributors" on their medium.

I don't get the concept. If someone posts that a bad thing happened and you downvote, couldn't that mean you are upset it happened? I know that wasn't the case here though.
