Is there a way to see if someone responds to my post without going all the way through to thread to see?

go to your post history. each post has a replies link.
the devs could implement a notification system for when you're responded to, but that would make this place too much like reddit and God forbid if we let that happen.

if you are on desktop click "Posts" next to My Links in the top left corner of screen...
On mobile, scroll to bottom and click "Posts" in the My Links section...
you can see how many replies your post has...
