It is offensive - but it should not be banned. Neither should the "N" word.

Banning these words makes it harder for us normal people to tell who the bigots and pigs are.

i really don't give much thought to what is posted here, so i am very apathetic 'round here.

I do however, agree with the N word being banned. That is a racist term and the tendency to be misused is vast.

The C word doesn't bother me all that much.

and i was mainly kidding about the cat fight comment.

it's all good though. without diversity on here we'd all be bored as frick.

Please note that my post does not state anything concerning the First Amendment or the right to free speech. I made no reference to such topics because this is a privately held message board; thus, such topics are not relevant.

the word "censor" implies such a reference. Censorship cannot even really exist in the absence of a gun-wielding state.

Is this water-slide broken? A drought perhaps? Because the "N" word has been banned here as long as I can remember, and except for the admins having fun banning words like ginger - its the only one that has been banned.

yeah - clearly, a very very slippery slope!!!!
First, I completely understand that the "N" word has been banned here for forever. However, there is near universal agreement (except on the Poli Water Board) that the "N" word is exceptional, if not unique.

Second, I think you will find near universal agreement that the "N" word is different from "count" in the way it should be treated. (At the very least, all but a very small minority of posters in this thread seem to think so.)

Third, and most importantly, there is little, if anything, to distinguish "count" from many other derogatory words: "whore," "bitch," "a-hole," "dick." Thus, the slippery slope exists. If you believe that "count" should receive the same treatment as the "N" word, how can you possibly argue that there is an acceptable basis to distinguish "count" from other derogatory words. And if there is no acceptable basis to distinguish such words, how does one create an acceptable basis to ban some words and not others. After all, "one man's vulgarity is another's lyric." Cohen v. California, 403 U.S. 15 (1971).

Pfffft. Just look for the derogatory use of the word "Canadian."

No. It doesn't. You might infer it, but none was implied.

Tell that to the Sisters or Brothers of most Catholic schools. Indeed, tell that to the administration of any private school. Tell them they cannot censor expression.

Censorship comes from power and/or authority. It does not relate solely to governmental action.

TigerPrincess- this was one of your examples, and I agree with your ideas on this issue - but to be fair - suggesting someone be kicked in the count isn't nearly as offensive as suggesting they ARE a count, don' you think?

Actually, I think that hinting at violence towards a woman may actually be worse than actually being called the word.
