Again, your speaking for a seasoned lifter who understands and knows all of this stuff.
When a beginner is sore, it affects them mentally which affects their physical lifts.
Beginners need rest days to fully recover, avoid injury and be able to lift consistently.

I would counter that dealing with soreness and working through it is a crucial aspect of learning how your body responds to lifting.
The weights a beginner uses may trigger soreness, but they won't detract from performance. Learning that is a big lifting milestone, IMO.
The general MWF layout of most linear program gives rest days without the detraining effect. If he's limited to 50 LB max DB's, he's going to hit detraining fairly fast.
