I'll probably wear the mask tonight while I'm reading an hour or so before I go to bed
Don’t do that. Good sleep also means having good habits. When it’s time to go to sleep put the mask on and go to sleep. I’ve had one for about ten years. I’m asleep within 5 minutes after putting on the mask. I get 7 to 7.5 hours of peaceful uninterrupted sleep every night.
If the exhaust pressure gets too bad the therapist can turn on EPR if you have a Resmed machine. It reduces the pressure when you exhale.

got one in october. have tried and tried to get used to it just can't. it's not the pressure, it's just something about the mask. i've used 3 different variations of nasal pillow.
in the 3ish months i've had it, i've made it 4 hours twice. i have to wear it 4 hours per night, 70% of the time to be in "compliance" with insurance.
oh, i was 5'9, 195 when i got it. was exhausted some days and if i could squeeze in a 10 minute nap i would absolutely take advantage. my sleep study said i had 5.1 events per hour. 5 events per hour is the minimum number to qualify for a cpap under the "mild sleep apnea" diagnosis.
i've since lost 20lbs. 172 yesterday. still skinny fat, though. i'm not tired at all during the day now so i think losing some weight helped my issues.

I had to try several mask until I got something I could stand.
Ended up with a pillow nasal mask
Currently a AirFit P10 Nasal Pillow Mask
I took about 2 weeks to get use to mask.
I found I hated ramp settings or machine in anything but a fix settings.
My wife within a month stated how I now breath and sleep without Jerking awake. Now I will be a walking zombie without machine within 2 nights.
PS. without machine I have to sleep setting in a chair in upright postion to get any meaningful rest.

I use the Philips dream wear full face mask. It took only a few days for me to get used to it. But every now and then you’ll have a night that you just have to give it up. I can’t say I slept better but without a doubt if I don’t use it for 2 days my energy is gone. As far as the pressure that’s always a problem when I get to bed if I’m moving around too much. I try to be in sleep position when I put it on. If not I just loosen the mask for 10-15 seconds until my breathing slows down.
Like I said I didn’t notice a lot of change like a lot of people do because I guess it was gradual improvement. It was huge after about a year I tried without it and that didn’t work. The best side effect for me was I took nexium 2-3 times a week. Since cpap I haven’t taken one in the 4.5 years I’ve been on it.
As far as how much your breathing is screwed up right away I noticed any alcohol like 1 glass of wine 2-3 hours before bed dramatically increased my breathing events. I would suspect big meals and eating late would have same effects
