Having surgery on my foot in a couple of weeks. Doc is going to do a nerve block prior. Anyone have this done before and what should I expect?

Just had a nerve block for the second time for a second knee surgery a couple weeks ago. Nothing to it. At least for the knee. They use ultrasound and inject the medicine then your leg starts to twitch for a bit and then it’s numb locally wherever they’re trying to block. It’s pretty weird but not really painful at all. Buckle up when it wears off though. Usually about 14-20 hours later. Pain spike is pretty significant when that happens. Hope your surgery goes well.

This will be beneficial post operatively and could last up to 24+ hours depending on the medication chosen. An anesthesiologist could do this under ultrasound guidance prior to the procedure and they might give you a little Versed to take the edge off or the surgeon might do it in the OR himself and you would only realize he did it after it wears off because you would be asleep when he does it.

I've had several for surgeries on my arm and neck/shoulder. You'll be so thankful that you got it after your procedure is done. Like the others said there's really nothing to it. Best of luck with your surgery and recovery!

I had it done on my back before ultimately having an epidural. It didn’t work at all for me, but the ESI does seem to work well.
