I've been thinking about making the transition to wearing these as my everyday winter/fall shoe. I've never liked wearing work boots and my old running shoes (brooks ghost or asics nimbus) aren't "tough" enough. I feel like the hiking shoes land somewhere in between. Is this an accurate assessment? Specifically the merrell chameleon.

Check out Salomon shoes. They are comfortable and hold up really well.

I had a pair of Merrel GTX Moabs about 7-8 years ago that I wore every day. The Vibram soles held up great but were a little slick on concrete. After about 10 months, I took them with me for work in Colorado and wore them for light work or when I just didn't feel like putting my hiking boots on.

They worked well on trails until the upper and sole simultaneously separated on both shoes causing me to fall down a slope into a cactus. I will never buy Merrel again.

Merrell shoes used to be great, but they've become trash.

I wear Blundstone boots in the fall/winter. They make a traditional hiking boot style sole, or ones with a lower, more dressy sole.

Merrell used to be quality, now not so much. Look at Salomon, Keen(still makes some boots in USA) or Danner.
