I had L2-L5 fusion 2 weeks ago. I’m in a back brace for 6 weeks and my back feels ok relatively speaking. I’m having some serious pain in my hip joints and the doctor attributes it to my posture changing to compensate for the back surgery which I get. Anybody had this surgery and have tips to get through the hip pain?

My dad had a similar one last summer. Said PT was pretty brutal at first, but mainly due to being sore and recovering. He was able to stand up straight for the first time in years, and is getting around great now. It was either last August or September when he had it done, and by Halloween you would have never known. Are you doing any PT yet? I know he stayed in the hospital maybe 3 nights or so and met with therapists during that and a few times afterwards. They should have some good stretches and exercises specific to your surgery recovery and for the hips. Most of his pain prior to surgery was down low in his back and in his hips.

I know this doesn't help you out right now, but there is a better surgery out there. My wife had complete disc replacement in her neck. No fusion needed. Back to 100% immediately following the surgery. From what I hear, not a lot of doctors do this surgery. Most stick with the fusion.

Just for future reference...

I had L3,4,5 fused. Replacement wasn’t an option due to arthritis. Had it done January of 2018. Pretty much took me a year to recover. Never was able to return to work and was put on disability. I was 57 when I had it done. Be patient and do what they tell you. I am in the gym daily now. Just at a different pace. No regrets.
