I’m training for a backcountry race in September. I’ve read about the 10% rule so on and so forth. I’ve bought a running plan that takes me up to the actual race date but my concern is I’m lacking in my foundation. I run about 20 miles give or take a week and in week two of the program I jump to 35 miles and continue to increase mileage up to the actual race. Is this setting me up for an injury or is this doable with a lacking mileage foundation.

First, we have an entire thread about this sort of stuff.

20-35 is a decent jump but very doable i would say. you could probably stand to lower the mileage per workout from 35 to high 20s and then start build into that. I'd bet in less than a month you'd be fine with 35+.

How hard are those 20 miles you run a week?

What is your mileage that you look to build up to? Injuries suck. I have been dealing with nagging things for the past 2 years that I could always deal with, but finally had IT band issues that really made me cut back to nothing.

I've decided to finally just build a legitimate base. I'm at about 21 miles per week right now and have been there for almost 2 months. Will bump that up to 25ish soon. Then 30 by the end of the summer. At that point, I'll try for another Marathon. Should be about 6 months of 20-30 miles per week before I even think of a real build. Nothing really hard at all.

If time is not a problem, increasing to 35 miles a week shouldn't be a problem, if you're already running 20 a week.

I've found that the biggest issue in increasing mileage isn't the actual running, it was my being able to get everything else in my life done.

But, then again I run at a 9+ minute pace, so 35 miles to me takes a lot longer to finish than other runners.
