Flatlanders: Here's Your Chance

There are those of us that are pretty tired of seeing these super low mile times on the Health and Fitness Board. While these times along the gulf coast are impressive, what's not impressive is that they are done seemingly running downhill. There are those of us that struggle to understand the concept of people running up highway onramps as part of their "hill work".
Well, it's the start of a New Year! And the good news, is that there are a pair of races in Birmingham, AL where you can get your hill work in and have those mile times come back to reality.
Statue to Statue 15K
There are two hills on this 15K course that are soul crushing. The first is on Stone River Rd at mile six and gains 270' over a mile. The second is on Brookwood and Crosshill roads and gains 180' over a mile. That is followed by a mile and a half of 500' of decline for the fastest finish you've ever had. Good People Brewing typically hosts a tent at the finish making for a good time. It is scheduled for April 3rd of 2021. Not sure what the status of this race will be, but like the odds of them running it. This is the race I'm getting ready for this year.
Peavine Falls Race
This race is at Oak Mountain State Park and goes straight up the road to Peavine Falls. Bad news: 822' of gain starting at mile 1.5 and continuing to mile 3. Good news: This is an out and back, which means you get to come down that 822'! However, it's on July 4th so the heat is oppressive and the last mile is switchback trails full of roots and rocks. This race WILL RUN. We ran it this past year and find it hard to believe they wouldn't run it again.
So, yall make some travel plans this year. Come to Bham and run some challenging courses with a bunch of elevation. I hope to see yall at both.

Welcome to the 29th running of the Ellis Porch Statue to Statue 15k. Starting in the shadow of Vulcan's statue and finishing near the Statue of Liberty, the race winds its way through the scenic neighborhoods of Mountain Brook, Alabama. The course gently rolls and is generally downhill for the first six miles. Runners then head up a pair of hills that are among the most challenging you'll find. The reward for climbing the hills is a fast mile-and-a-half downhill finish that's sure to generate the quickest splits you've ever run. Yes, it's a challenging course but you haven't run Birmingham until you run the race we like to call The South's Toughest 15k!

Peavine Falls Race

Welcome to the 40th Annual Peavine Falls Run. This iconic event is a 4th of July tradition in Central Alabama. Why go to Atlanta and run (walk) with 60,000 people when you can visit the beautiful Oak Mountain State Park, run with 600 of your closest friends, and enjoy a great race, a fun course, and have a great time all the way around!

9 weeks left to get ready. I’m doing the Hal Higdon Intermediate 15K plan. The chiropractor of all people has finally got my hip mobility issues straightened out I believe AND I’m down 10 lbs. I obviously have some more training and diet time to get where I want to be.
The challenge still stands. The race will be brutal, but fun.

Have run peavine twice. Great race with a classic shirt. I’ll probably run it again this year. Would love to run statue, but I’m skeptical it goes. Birmingham has cancelled all races this year it seems like.

Well, they can slightly alter the route to get out of Bham entirely. Not sure if Mnt Brook will let us go or not. I’ll talk to some of the BTC people next weekend and ask about it.

Is the Peavine Falls race a trail run or road run (or a bit of both)? I’ve been to Oak Mountain before and always thought the trails would be fun to race on.
Edit: I checked out the course map provided through the link. Looks like a mix of trail and road.

only the last mile is trail. and it's easy single track with some roots.

Alternate Challenge - Some of us flatlanders are jealous of you "mountain" runners posting about all your gains. So how about coming on down off the mountain and dropping some fast miles at the Louisiana Marathon March 7th.
"The Louisiana Marathon is a USAT&F Certified course and an official Boston Qualifier route. It boasts one of the highest BQ rates of all marathons since it features a fast, flat, runner-friendly path through the lakes, along the river, around downtown, on the university campus and in historic neighborhoods"
Running on flat ground should be a cake walk!
Just giving you a hard time. I lived near 280 and Brook Highland for a year so I know the Bham hills.

The trail was the hardest part of the route IMO, but I hate trail running.

I want to get into some travel races. Hoping to find one in Jackson Hole this summer.

you looking for a race near Jackson hole, check out Beaverhead 100k or 50k in Salmon Idaho. Beautiful race that runs the Continental Divide Trail. 90% of the race is above 8000 ft elevation and peaks out about 10,200. 100k has 12k ft gain and 15kft decent. One of the few races I'd do again.

Thankfully, the 50 & 100Ks are the week after we are there.
I'm missing the 1/2 and Full they have there by a couple of weeks. I'll probably pick a day to run the half course.

frick.
The Karens and Kens of Mountain Brook, AL have caused the organizers to move this race. For the second straight year, I won't be able to run the race I specifically trained for. This year they are at least running it somewhere else (Oak Mountain State Park), but it won't be the same. The elevation change isn't nearly what made the race infamous.
I'm going out there. My target pace is 8:00/mile. That would be a 2:00/mile improvement over my last 15K time. Less elevation and cold this weekend.
