I find that you only get into the zone at 13. You should go for 17. That's where real gains are made.

Also, to OP, what is your feelings about drinking your own urine during the fast?

I have to eat during the work week. Start losing focus when I get hungry.

If you incorporate a good diet and exercise regimen that will help your problem.

Fasting four days is probably a bit much if you've never fasted before. It is better to build up. Caffeine does activate insulin, which may defeat some of the greater benefits of doing the fast in the first place (so coffee is a no go for a real fast).

If you do decide on such a long fast for a first time fast you need to make sure you have proper food for when you start to eat again. Also know exactly how long you want to do the fast for before you start. Mentality going into it is huge because you are habituated to eating multiple times a day and this is completely new to you. I'd suggest at least a one day fast, if not multiple one day fasts, first, just to get your body and mind acclimated to not eating to ready yourself for the multiday fasting.

Good luck to you in whatever you choose.

Yeah, your body tends to naturally already do that, whether you fast or not.

Do people usually work out while fasting? I can’t imagine I would have any energy to do so.

Can you cite research for this because everything I've seen or heard about fasting says caffeine is okay. If true this changes my IF routine quite a bit.

Just the first link in search shows

https://www.livestrong.com/article/531771-does-caffeine-cause-insulin-release/

Although caffeine increases pancreatic insulin release, it does not appear to do so by directly stimulating your pancreatic beta cells. Rather, it increases your insulin resistance, which prompts the release of more insulin to compensate for poor glucose metabolism. Most studies evaluating this effect have only considered caffeine's short-term effects, but many investigators agree that caffeine is not responsible for coffee's long-term health benefits. If you have diabetes or another condition that affects your ability to metabolize glucose, adopt a low-sugar diet and consider switching to decaffeinated coffee.

So they say if you have to maybe a glass of black coffee or its equivalent is tolerable to fasting without any real repercussions. I'm not trying to be a dick with this statement either, but if you are doing IF and not a multiday fast it is doubtful that you drinking coffee is really having any negative effect to what is achieved by IF. The big time fasting benefits typically start around like 36 hours or so while IF is really just a reduction in calories. So no worries for you
