Couple of jump rope questions

I want to start jumping rope outside of my formal workouts. The two issues are choosing the right rope and having some kind of mat to jump on outside.
Rope issue. The ones at the gym are on the heavy side. Love them for singles, but for doubles, I don't think they are ideal. OTOH, the speed stuff is so light, I have trouble with timing. I just don't know where the rope is. Is there a compromise? 3mm cable maybe? Then, there are so many handle options. How does one choose a style?
Is a yoga mat sufficient for out doors? Would I be better off getting something from Tractor Supply?

I bought a cheap speed rope off Amazon and use a yoga mat in my garage on top of the concrete so it doesn't tear the rope up. The handles broke off within a week so I just grip the rope at each end and start skipping. My workouts with the rope only last 20 mins max so I don't mind the inconvenience, but adding the yoga mat was the most crucial part because of the shock absorption to the ankles, knees, etc. The shoes matter a lot too tho. Also, if your gym has basketball court just do your routine on that surface with a yoga mat, and then be sure to wipe up the sweat afterwards.

The plastic of the rope can still ruin the finish of the court's surface.

Wait. There is no court. It's just a room with a rubber floor. The only wood in the entire place is by some of the lifting stations. I would not jump there.

Takes a lot to air condition a whole basketball court.

The field mouse is fast, but the owl sees at night.

Off the wall question, but does anybody else's pecs bounce uncomfortably when jumping rope?

Is it wrong that I watched the whole thing just to see what would . . . umm . . . happen?

Their series is interesting. I am not convinced that the girl can speak.
