One of my best friends just diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. 50 years old. Probably has less than a year. I'm trying to be there for him. Just started Chemo. Tolerated it fairly well. But I've heard Chemo gets worse as you go on. I realize that everyone probably reacts differently but is this generally true, his reaction to it will get worse and worse? Just trying to prepare for what's coming.

Sorry to hear that. Pancreatic is a bad one.

A lot of it depends on the medicines and the dosing. And your body reacting to it, getting weaker, etc. My sis had breast cancer and beat it, but it came back as a brain tumor a few years back. She’s been undergoing treatment since her surgeries and the oncologist and neurologist have changed it up a few times over the years. I’m not sure if the meds for pancreatic are similar to breast or brain but all of them are not the same level of side effects.

There are different types of chemo drugs. Find out what he is going to get and google symptoms. I had colon cancer and did chemo every other week. First week, nothing much at all. And then around 3/4's of the way through it started to kick my arse. It really lowers your immune system. I think i caught a bug at one point and really got sick. They give you drugs to counter the immunity but not until your red blood cells are way down. It also brings on a lot of depression as if the disease itself isn't enough. Good luck.

Pancreatitic cancer scared me because as far as I know you don’t really have any symptoms before it spreads.

My buddy was diagnosed last year with stage four brain cancer. Was given a -30% chance of survival. He beat it, but is still on the road to recovery, principally because of what the treatment did to him. Either way it was a miracle, we all were prepared for the worst.

A big factor is whether your friend is otherwise healthy. Chemo/radiation will be terribly hard physically and mentally. Just keep in mind that when doctors give odds, those numbers include people with other underlying factors working against them.

I couldn’t give better advice than the other posters in this thread. Just be the friend that keeps him laughing. Spirit is as important as anything.

ETA: He was 54 when he got his diagnosis.
