Anyone ever built a basic squat rack using squared steel?

With the current price of workout equipment, I figured I would explore the possibility of building my own basic squat and shoulder press rack. It wouldn't be holding more than 200 lb.

The big chain stores carry 1.5 x 1.5 inch, 14 gauge, steel tubing. I was going to swing by a building supply store this weekend to see if they had larger, stronger steel tubing. Not a welder, so would have to be held together using bolts. TIA.

I've never attempted this, but the tubing you have linked is a telescoping style tube, which when extended to the full 72" will be very unstable. Definitely wouldn't use that. There are several DIY guides on google for wood racks. It will be tough to build anything stable without welding, you'll have to get creative.

Here is a cheap rack you could try to base yours off of

Need to use some flat plate for corner gussets.

It can certainly be made to work. My rack is all bolted together square tubing. I wouldn't recommend somebody with little experience building stuff do it.

dont get it from big box store. honestly better off building out of wood but understand at the price of wood currently, you might as well just buy a basic squat stand.

I would not be using the telescopic feature. I've seen plenty of homemade wood racks. Figured steel would be a better option. FWIW, I wouldn't be against bolting to the studs of my garage for additional stability.
