Advice for getting back into the gym

I used to go to the gym religiously when I was single. Developed shoulder issues and slacked off big time before getting married. 6 years and 3 kids later I ballooned to 220lbs. Finally got tired of being fat and started counting calories and walking/jogging. I’ve gotten down to 190 but have plateaued. I want to get back to around 170 and I know weights will melt the fat off but I’m worried about the shoulder issues coming back. What are some good routines involving weights but not getting into heavy stuff? TIA

Run a linear program starting with the bar. I love Candito's linear control because it requires good form which will protect your shoulder.

How tall are you? I’m sitting at 195 and I’m 5’10”. If I tried to get down to 170, I’d shed a shitoad of lean mass.
If I were you, I’d be more interested in losing inches and not worrying about trying to lose 20lbs.
And don’t let your previous shoulder issue scare you. Everyone eventually has shoulder issues. The key is learning how to properly warm up and recover after you workout.

I’m 5’8. I’ve dropped 4 pants sizes already but now that I’m in my mid 30s the weight sits a lot differently then it did when I was 25.

I’d still concentrate on losing inches. My waist size is down to 31 and I’m at least 12 years older than you and I really haven’t dieted hard.
You can transform your body, but it takes time and consistency in the gym.

It seems like all the weight I’ve lost has come in my waist and legs but now I feel top heavy. Would I burn more fat concentrating more on certain areas or is it cumulative?

You can’t pinpoint where you burn it.
Continue some moderate cardio but start lifting. I’d start something like a starting strength routine and see how your shoulder feels as you progress. Strength gains will keep you hungry. Once you get to a strength plateau, revisit what you are doing and make some changes.
My warmup now includes active stretching, biofreeze and a lot of warmup sets as I work up to my working sets followed by rolling out what I’ve just worked.
