Body weight exercises are fine. I remember an interview with Tim Tebow where his dad told him when he got his first pimple he could start to workout with weights, said he was pumped to see a pimple when he was younger. I'm sure Tebow's dad had some decent reasoning for it

yea his reason was being ignorant. dozens of studies that show its safe to lift weights at any age and even the american society of pediatric doctors recommends it starting at age 7 now.
for those saying bodyweight only...lets discuss
studies show that if you hands are on the ground you are lifting approx 64% of bodyweight in the pushup. lets say they weigh 50lbs at 7, that would put them lifting 32 lbs.
many kids can not do a pushup, so if we starting them with 10lbs dbs on bench is that suddenly more dangerous than doing the pushup? is suddenly the 32 bodyweight load safer than the 20lbs of external load?
its not and makes no damn sense and is based off the bullshite one doctor said in the 70s.
do we need to be mindful of spinal loading....sure.
anyone that has questions still....i highly encouraged you to read the barbell medicine series i linked earlier. that is 2 of the leading medical professionals that also happen to be top level coaches and lifters.
