100% agree with these for the Laffy area as well. There used to be the option of trying to take it over the projects before they put up the fence on 5 at Muni. That was a scramble only shot for me.

I had to do it Saturday morning. I went for a big hook off the tee trying to thread the needle around the corner. I hit the last oak and it kicked back. 9i to clear and a wedge in. 2 putt smooth par

If you hit a perfect t shot there's hardly a window at all for a clean 2nd to the green

You can work the ball around or over the tree in the second half of the fairway.

Working your ball around a tree in a tee shot on a par 5 is bad design. It encourages every player to play the hole the same way, not influence 4s or 6s

Width and angles bro

I was replying to the comment about the second shot.

There are plenty of well designed and renowned holes that encourage players to play the hole the same. This isn't Golden Tee.

Not really. They may look good and green and be hard, but that doesn't mean the design is good. Look at all of the best holes in the world, there's an aggressive line that brings birdie or bogey well into play or a safe line that almost assures par, but it's really hard to make birdie.

You can hug the right on #6. Would make the tree on your second a better angle. Then get birdie.

Or.

You could try that line, end up in the small pond and get a 6 or 7.

Doesn't make it bad designed hole. I'd love to par every hole.

Right, so if you are a good player, you have no real incentive to go for it. It's a three shot hole every time

A good course should force a golfer to use damn near every club in their bag.

If you enjoy par 5's that are driver, 5i/6i, putter. That's no fun. Give a golfer a true test.

These two things aren't mutually exclusive. A good course does not force every golfer to use 3 wood, 6 iron, wedge on a par 5 every time either.

A true test isn't there's a tree here that poses no reward and a lot of risk so I'm just going to lay back and make par 9 times out of 10

It's a mental test. I'd take par on that type of hole 9/10 times.

If you want a golf course set up your way, go do it.

Correct but to get there in 2 is an extremely tough task. Which is why i said even if you hit the perfect drive it is still not a rewarding shot. B/c of how the hole is designed

So.....every par 5 should be a 3 shot hole?
No I enjoy being tested with a 3 wood from 245 out to an uphill small target area. That test my true shot making abilities, if I hit a perfect drive off the tee box at 290 yards. The hole is designed imperfect imo. apparently not in your mind which is fine by me.

Dont think of me as a driver 5iron type of par 5 player if I'm playing a 7200 yards golf course in S. Louisiana

There's nothing mental about 3 wood, 6 iron, wedge, two putt.

9 at the Bluffs is perfect. Top fairway is driver, iron, wedge, 2 putt. Bottom fairway is driver, hybrid that's all carry over a lake.

I've never intentionally hit it on the top fairway because it's boring. But giving someone the ability to play it completely different than how I play it makes it a great hole, IMO.
