How important is it to do this outdoors? Anyone been fitted indoors?

I've never been fitted for wedges and am long overdue for a new set. There are so many variables that go into picking a wedge and I don't want to buy off the rack at this point.

Outdoor and anybody who says differently is an idiot. I want all my fitting outside in real world conditions.

I was fitted indoors at Impact Precision, I’m not a great ball striker but I can hit good wedge shots. They had you hit a full shot and then 50 yrd shots. I don’t remember the degree of the fitting wedge but I was fitted into the same shafts as my irons. It’s worked well for me. Really wanted some Vokeys but my numbers were better with Cleveland RTX 6 Zipcores.
I just replaced them with the new RTZ wedges.

I don't understand the concept of doing a wedge fittings inside. Most wedge shots aren't full swings from a perfect lie. You gotta have different lies, different turf conditions, sand, etc.Same reason I wanna get fit for irons, hybrids, or fairway woods on turf, you gotta know the turf interaction.

Definitely do it outdoors if possible.

I hate hitting off of mats

I have 50°, 55° (54° bent to 55) and 60° raw wedges, all bent 3° flat (long arms) and with lead tape in areas. It’s safe to say I’m a believer in fitting for wedges.

Wedge Fitting

Wedge fitting is tough. I'd think of it in two tiers.

Tier 1: Distance management. The bare minimum is going in and getting fitted so you can bridge the distance from your PW and make sure you don't have any big gaps between your wedges. Indoors, outdoors, doesn't matter.

Tier 2: Grind and bounce. This gets way more complicated. What sort of swing do you have? What are the course conditions you play in most? You need a PhD to understand some of this wedge mechanics. There is definitely some benefit to this, but I doubt most people have a fitter in their area that can do this sort of stuff. Ideally you'd be outside hitting out of sand, off soft lies, hard pan, and in between, but that's likely not the case unless you are a pga pro.

Seeing that wedge fitting is mostly about sole/turf interaction, I'd say it's pointless to get an indoor fitting on a mat
