I’ve been playing the original P790s now since late 2017. I do like them but I don’t like the inconsistency in the lower irons when I try to flight things down or change my distance. (For reference sake, I hit my PW around 135-140. If I try to flight it down it’s wildly inconsistent for whatever reason, normally long). I also don’t like the fuel/sound of the 6-PW. My best way of describing my experience with it is “clunky”.

Has anyone played the original set and now have new P790s and have a reference to the improvement?

The secondary portion of this question is is there a comparable set in another brand. I used to play Titleist and love how they felt, was able to control the distances much easier. Are the 150s a better option than the new P790s?

I tried the p790's and t150's when I got fitted last summer. I can't exactly remember why, but the 790's didn't do it for me. And going in, it was a club I was interested in. I didn't even consider the t150 because I didn't consider myself someone who should be anywhere near a "player" iron, and I view the 150's as on that border.

Like I said, i can't recall if it was the swing weight combinations, or what, but I hit the t150's better and just liked them overall. I find my distance control and feel to be pretty good for my skill level. I have no regrets. I will say I also have distance issues with flighted shots, but as a ~13 handicap, I'm just starting to try to include that in my game on rare occasions, and I chalk that up to my skill level.

The P790's weren't built to flight the ball. They have a lower center of gravity which launches the ball higher, thin face plus the speed foam gives it more ball speed which make the ball go higher and farther. I'm not saying it can't be done, it's just that the design of the club makes it harder to do, also those clubs do not produce much spin so flighting the ball down without spin will make it harder to stop the ball on the greens. If your a TaylorMade guy, try the P770's, if you strike the ball well, they will give you more control over your trajectory and shot making. Do know that you will lose a little distance with them because the lofts aren't as strong as the P790's. If you want something in between, try the Srixon ZXi5 or Mizuno JPX 925 Forged, they are a players distance iron that give a little more control over the ball, not as much as the P770's but more than the P790's. Won't lose much distance or forgiveness but will have a little more ability to flight them. I had the 2021 version of the P790's, loved them till I got better a needed more spin and consistency in yardage to hit greens. I normally carry my 7 iron 160-165 but if I hit it pure, 180 and would fly the green or hit and not stop because of no spin. I wanted something that maybe would give me a little less distance but wasn't inconsistent, I use the Srixon ZXi5

I moved from and the P790s to the T150s about 2 years ago when my left right dispersion improved. For me they've had better front back dispersion and only play about a half club shorter. I too experienced the random trampoline effect with the p790s.
