Pinehurst trip review

Got a chance to go to Pinehurst a few weeks ago. There was just two of us wasn’t a last minute trip but didn’t plan for long. We had a VRBO right on the 17th green of the #5 course. Which was fun to sit out back end of day and watch a few groups play through.
Pinehurst #2- I am a 16hc and my cousin is a 21 and we both loved it and will play again. It’s not intimidating off the tee and is wide open. All the fun starts with the second shot. We played the day after a good rain so the greens were much softer than usual. Our caddie was fun to talk with during the walk, gave every yardage and helped read every putt. I’ve heard you can’t lose a ball on #2 and that was true for both of us.
Tobacco Road- this place is just wild. In a way it the opposite of #2. The tee shots are intimidating but there is tons of room to hit it and the forced carries aren’t as far as they look. The greens are big but not as sloped as I thought they would be. There are a few with giant slopes to feed an approach shot to a certain spot but overall the cupping areas were flat. There are some greens that are 60-90 yards wide and quite a few blind shots which I loved.
Pinehurst #3- most at the resort refer to it as #2 little brother and I see why. Greens are similar just a little smaller. Not a very long course and par is 68. They lost a few holes when the cradle was built so it got shortened, but they did a great job and the newer greens look and perform just like the old. Nice quick round that was relaxing after the first two we experienced.
The Cradle - play it. Have some drinks, have fun. Same for putting course. Post round have a few beers and have some fun.
We ate at the normal spots mentioned here and our favorite was Pinehurst Pizza. Good super casual place to drink a few beers and good pizza.
Overall trip was great. Would go again. I would like to play some of the other courses in the area but would have no problems playing the same ones.

Just got back from Pinehurst last Monday. Stayed at the Holly and played 7,9, and 2. Pinehurst village is one of the most charming, beautiful little towns I’ve ever visited. Absolutely gorgeous. Thought the service everywhere was great.
It rained 5” the Thursday we arrived. Felt bad for all the golfers trying to get their rounds in under those conditions. The putting course was a fun way to kill time before we played.
Started #9 with par on the first and third holes. Went back to being myself after that.
You can in fact lose a ball (or two) on #2. It just requires a skill level seldom seen on that course. we didn’t walk the course, nor did we have a caddie. Probably would do that differently next time.
7 and 9 were fun, #2 more frustrating for the two more skilled golfer in our foursome. Would play 2,4, and 8 when I go back. Didn’t get to play the cradle. By the time our rounds were over it was cocktail hour.
Drum and Quill was fun. Food was good as was the atmosphere. Dugans is an interesting little bar, but the bartender was a bit of a bitch. She needs to learn the tip is based largely on personality. Pinehurst brewery is cool, but way too crowded.
Overall, it was a lifetime trip. Would definitely go back and would love to do so while renting a house like you did. Gorgeous place, rich with history, and something any and every golfer should experience.
Glad you enjoyed it as much as I did.

The saying of a good golf course is hard for good golfers and easy for bad golfers is true here. The two guys we were paired with were pretty good and they were frustrated all day trying to hold the greens. No forced carries and being able to putt from anywhere helps hacks like me.

Cmon man. I’m by no means good, but I don’t completely suck either
I’ll admit the challenges of the place were probably less appreciated by me than the other two. They’re good golfers and well traveled. I was just thrilled to be there. I can play bad golf anywhere but it’s more enjoyable to hit my 8I fat at Pinehurst then it is at Beaver Creek.
I did get some good laughs listening to the other guy’s frustrations with the greens on #2 tho.

The first time I played #2, the greens drove me nuts. I'd hit quality shots and they'd roll right on off the greens.
The second time, I aimed for the middle of every green and forgot about the hole locations. I shot 6 shots better.

Are all the course with Caddy?
Posted on 11/23/20 at 4:54 pm to thelawnwranglers
Caddie isn’t required on any courses but I’d imagine available at all.
#2 with a caddie is a must.

Not required. I saw caddies on #2and 4.
#2 is cart path only full time so caddy and walking are way to go. Or I’d push cart it if I didn’t want a caddy.
I’m sure you can hire a caddy for the others if you wanted.

Is June a good time to go to Pinehurst? Thinking about it for 2021.

I would think anytime is good. Not sure how or if pricing changes happen during different seasons.
One thing I found out was Pinehurst was started as a winter retreat for northern folks. They overseeded wall to wall until Crenshaw Coore did the #2 renovations and convinced them the course would play better non overseeded.
We only played 18 per day with either the cradle or just putting course after. If you plan to get 36 each day longer days would be nice. We went last week of October.

I dream of the day I can take an adult trip there - I have been there since 2016 for the USKids World Championships there - and it’s a stressful but great time... I always see guys on guy trips just having the time of their lives and I cannot comprehend how I will get there haha - girls are 10/11 so one day in 8 years I guess :)
Place is first rate all the way :)
