PGA Tour bans green-reading materials

Starting with the new season. Seems like a fair decision to me. They’re pros so they should be able to read a putt without any help.

I too think this is a good move. I expect that it should speed the pace of play...and that really needs to be an objective of the PGA.
The PGA isn't as bad as high school girls golf for tournament round time, but it seems to be trying to get there.

I tend to think banning the greens books will slow down play. All those players are so meticulous I think they will look at the green more. They really only look at the books to verify what they think they see. Without the books they will be second guessing themselves and take multiple looks from 21,000 different angles.

Well, I can't argue with you, but I hope you are wrong.
I have assumed that the range finders should be speeding things along, but haven't seen any data on that.

No, they look at the book, count off the distance to the flag, and calculate the amount of break from that distance. I couldn't find the picture, but I've seen it on twitter of a few times. It's essentially a 2% slope from 12 feet breaks 4 inches and a 2% slope from 18 feet breaks 7 inches so if you have a 15 foot putt on 2% slope you claclulate the break using the math from those other distances.
I can tell you with certainty that this isn't going to slow play

It isn’t going to speed it up either. All it will do is make more work for the caddies.

I think it will a little bit. They'll still get the slop with their feet, but they'll have to line it using that instead of going to the book.
Im not saying they're going to start playing 4 hour rounds but it may speed them up 15 minutes or so

The caddies will be sent out to the course on Monday to recreate the green books on the yardage books. If anything, it may make it slower if the yardage book doesn’t show something and they have to try and figure it out. I don’t see the point of this.

There's nothing to figure out, you can get the slope with your feet then it's all about the math problems, which are no longer going to be available

How are caddies going to get the % slope on a green on their own? Sure, they can estimate, but that's not the same thing.

That is exactly right. So, now the players will have an educated guess on paper to look at. Then in real time the players will have to try and figure out how accurate the notes are. I fail to see how this will speed up play.

It’s my understanding it’s the PGA tour banning the books on the pro tour starting next season. Players voted on it.
