The bottom of your elbow should be facing straight down.

I had the exact same struggles. Everything I was doing was making it worse. The more I tried to swing from the inside the worse it got. I realized that my trail alarm had gotten higher than my lead arm, and the inside surface of the elbow was basically pointing straight forward. From that position that right arm can swing only to the left. I now focus on having the inside of my forearm/elbow facing almost perpendicular to the target line at address. You can do this without over strengthening your hand grip. That puts me in a position to swing from the inside and it immediately fixed my problem.

I honestly started doing this bad when I got back into playing earlier this year after my hunting season break. It was literally a mind game because I couldn’t fix it until I went down a rabbit hole and came across Justin Rose’s swing advice about the whole skimming the rock across water. You aren’t doing that at all by being over the top and you can actually remember it during a round. Kinda like wax on wax off from the Karate Kid. It has worked tremendously for me and it was actually kinda coincidental that Justin was replicating the move while somewhat exaggerated during the Masters.

You are likely taking the club away too much on the outside of the swing plane. In other words, taking the club on the backswing away from your body.

You want the backswing to be more in the “inside”. To do this feel like you are trying to swing the club more around your body rather than away from your body.

This may produce hooks. If so lessen the effect and find the middle ground between away and around your body.

90% of trouble in the swing happens on the backswing(60% of the time)

Good luck, learning in golf never ends.

I’d go get one lesson if the videos online can’t resolve it for you.

I’ve found at times that golf is a game of opposites.

Yes you do want to “swing from the inside”, but getting the club on plane may be easier IF you “loop” it like Furyk.
He takes it “outside”, then drops it in the slot and swings through from inside.

Also, there have been golfers who play very well that are technically over the top.

This discusses tour players who are “over the top.”

Bottom line, for $50 and 30 minutes a teaching pro could most likely help you sort through this.
