Off the Shelf Iron Sets Not being Properly "Aligned"

A friend of mine was in my office a few minutes ago, and talking about how he just bought his kids a set of junior clubs, used. He said the guy he bought them from told him that most of the mass produced golf clubs are not properly aligned on the shafts they come on. In other words, say the shaft is made to flex from 90 degree to 180 degrees if they are clamped down at the grip, the head is put only rotated differently. I guess its hard for me to explain in text what he was told, but what it boils down to is that "off the shelf" clubs are typically miss aligned on the shafts they come on.
Now, I can believe that when it comes to graphite shafts, possibly, but when talking about irons with steel, stiff shafts, how true can this be?
Is the guy who told him this completely full of shite?
He had a machine to fit the club head onto the shaft "properly". My buddy paid him $20 to "align" his driver head onto his shaft while he was there.
This kinda sounds like a load of bull to me....

With anything mass produced, you can expect some imperfections, but to say they are all off would be stretching it

I get that, but I would imagine they would have to be within a certain tolerance. Within a degree or so of the flex of the shaft, no? In order to pass quality control...He made it sound like they just randomly stick the heads on the shafts, and roll with it.
I mean, lets be honest, if I'm a 20 handicapper, and my 8i is off 1 degree, its not going to change my rounds...

That’s just stupid. All major manufacturers boast about the quality of their clubs. They all have quality control measures.
I think your friend is either an idiot or been fed a bunch of bullshite.

Well after reading up about the CFI of shafts, there is some legitimacy to the claims. Not all shafts have a perfect CFI, which in turn means they don't flex perfectly. Higher rated shafts have high CFI rating. I believe he either misunderstood the concept, or didn't quite explain it to me very well, or I didn't understand it. But after reading up on it, it does make some sense. There are a bunch of articles online you can read about the CFI and its effects on flexing. However this is mostly on graphite shafts, not so much on the stiffer steel shafts of irons.

Think about it in terms of percentages. If your 7 iron is 33 degrees of loft and off 1.5 degrees that's almost 5% of error. Are you going to still not going to duff it if you are 18 handicap, no, but its a pretty big tolerance for error

Titleist use to be one of the worst off the rack, they could be way off on lies and lofts in some sets.
Callaway use to be terrible with their proprietary shafts called the RCH shafts in the Big Berthas and Great Big Berthas.
Ping was always one of the best, the ZZ65 and JZ iron shafts is still used today on tour.
Most all manufacturers have buckled down and use quality materials now.

If they aren't "properly aligned" it's really not going to make much of a difference for Jaxxson and his hockey style grip anyway.

Spine alignment is a real thing. That being said I think the human body isn’t capable of repeating the exact same swing every time to notice

For kids clubs or cheap shite yeah it’s possible. For major OEM’s this is probably negligible.
Google “pureing” or pured (or spine align) shafts. A lot of the top end fitters offer it but I never bought it would make that much of a difference anyway

This is kinda where I'm at on the subject.

This is why I get fitted for every set of irons I buy.
