New vs used irons

I have been getting back into the game after being out 25 years. I did a Ping "fitting" last week on the new i540 and I liked it. I have a fitting at PGASS Monday so going through the process for the right clubs.
My question is if previous model irons in the used market ($500-$700) will have much of diminished performance. My debate is if I should buy a used players distance set before paying the higher prices for the new model clubs. If it comes down to paying 800 for a used set, I would just pay the extra for the newest model set.
I need the distance. I hit pretty much on target line but my old 7 iron is only averaging about 125 yds. The newer clubs I have been hitting in the sims are upper 150 yards.

Well, you didn’t do a fitting for the older model. So I wouldn’t expect everything to be the same as the fitting. So you’d need to adjust expectations

You only live once.
You already did the fitting.
Spend that dough.
Enjoy.

Agreed. My hesitancy is that as I play more, my swing will get into a better groove, and will that change how I fit into the club today.

To be honest, most of us NEED multiple sets of clubs.
Golf is an addiction.
Being a club ho is a good thing.

Get you a set of Miura KM700’s and force yourself to get better with the best there is.

Yes, these are beautiful.
You can never spend too much on equipment that you NEED.

Yes, players distance clubs don't spin as much and if you start playing more and getting better, you will hopefully hit the ball with the center of the clubface more, in turn you will strike the ball well but the ball will not spin enough to hold the greens thus needing a different set of clubs if you're serious about it. If you don't hit your irons high, this will make matters worse. Try sets until you can find one that you can hit a 7 iron at least 80' high, 16-20 degrees launch angle, 45-50 degrees descent angle(great for holding greens) and with 5500-7000 spin. You can buy brand new irons that are the previous years model for several hundred dollars less and now is the time with all the new stuff coming out.

as I play more: if you play more, it’s probably because you are getting better, and playing more helps you get better. It’s a loop.
my swing will get into a better groove: true, but score involves putting/chipping/ball striking/course management so your improvement will be a combination of these attributes- ball striking is certainly the one that will determine your best potential, but golfers can lower scores by leaning into better more realistic target selection and short game refinement.
and will that change how I fit into the club today: it could, but once you’ve got fitted once, it’s a gateway drug, and you will “NEED” shiny, new toys to get better..

In my opinion one of the best looking irons ever made and I want a set bad… granted I probably would be afraid to hit them. I want to hang on my wall as a display piece

After hitting different clubs from Mizuno, Taylor Made, Callaway, I went with the i540.
Taylor Made Qi was 2nd for me but the i540 provided a very easy relaxed swing with the best control and distance. It's going to be great being on the course and not feeling I have to over swing for distance.
