My dad is 67 and has been playing a lot with me lately. He is recently taking lots of interest to improve his game. He still has plenty of club head speed but fights a weak high shot with his irons. Driver he can hit 250 all day with a flat ball flight. With irons he doesn’t take a divot and hits everything a mile in the air with his older Ben hogan blade cavity backs. For example he will flush a 5 iron that goes 160 yards but 130 feet in the air.

I’m wondering what to suggest he work on to get low penetrating shots. He is interested in new clubs but isn’t sold on that changing is iron game

It might time for him to accept his age may be catching up with him. I know plus handicaps that are hitting Ping G425 irons. There’s nothing wrong with using the best equipment for your current game.

Yea that’s where I’m trying to see what needs to change. He has zero problems with launch though and he appreciates a clean and tight club head down at the ball

Have him take a look at what Srixon and Mizuno have to offer. Same tight look with options that have a bit more muscle and forgiveness in the head.

ETA: He can try out clubs from Hogan’s new lines or even Sub 70

Sounds like he may be adding loft at impact.

Try stronger left hand grip, hands lead the club head to impact

More forward shaft lean; ball position farther back; weight stays on leading leg more during the transition

He's dragging the toe through impact. He needs to learn to get to his left leg faster to start the downswing and start "throwing" the toe toward the target before impact.

Hit some short wedges doing that and he'll see the difference.
