How much am I looking at for an iron fitting? - Updated

I've never actually been custom fitted. I found where I want to go, and the fitting comes free if I purchase clubs through the fitter so how much would I be looking at approximately? I'm not going to skimp out so I'll get what I get fitted for so AP2's, Mizuno, Ping whatever.
So I guess put simply, what range am I looking in, including possibly upgrading to Project X shafts as well?

Well, it looks like it’s free. If not, it’s probably ~$100.

That depends on the club maker. Srixon and Mizuno will usually kick that in free along with grip upgrades.
This is a great time of year to buy last years product, bc they will upgrade everything free to ship out the clubs to make room for new stock dropping in February. It’s what I did last year.

Can I get out for around $1500 or am I looking at closer to $2k?

You buying the clubs from the fitter? If so, you’ll just pay about 15% more than what you would pay if you bought the clubs from Dick’s. It’s really not that much more. The fitting will probably be included in the price of the clubs.
ETA most major manufacturers will have some free grip and shaft upgrades available

I would assume so because if I buy them from there I won't "pay" for the fitting. I understand it'll be built in, but I'm assuming the price difference will be negligible between paying $150 or whatever for the fitting and then getting the clubs myself or just not paying for the fitting.

My Srixons 6-AW was $850ish. Then, I ordered the 5 later for $120.
$120 a stick is about right with it being custom.
Where are you getting fitted?

I went to Shaun Webb last year at the 265 Academy. I believe the cost was $200 but it was a Christmas present from my wife so I’m not sure. The fitting took an hour and I ordered my irons through Shaun a week later after I shopped them myself with the specs he gave me.
It somewhat depends on if you know what you want and just want the fitter to dial in the specs, or do you want the fitter to suggest a manufacturer and club for you? Shaun has just about all the latest and greatest stuff available to try and I did not get the impression that he was pushing any one club over another.
I would be suspect of getting fitted at someplace like Dicks Sporting Goods as I don’t know that the fitters there are really that qualified. I view it as “golf insurance” ... spend a little extra for the fitting to have piece of mind that you have the right equipment and you won’t be replacing it six months later.

I have good knowledge on most irons and shafts and what not, but I'm not locked in to a certain manufacturer.

I'm getting fitted by a guy that's supposed to have a really good reputation in the Dallas area. Has track man and all that and outdoors so it'll be a true fitting

TM P730’s are fire. Wish I was good enough to play them

Since you're in the DFW area, Clubchampion is not far from you in Plano. An iron fitting through them is normally $150. Through 1/31, they're offering 33% off individual fittings, or 50% whole bag fittings. An iron fitting through them would cost you $100, whole bag $175. I just did the whole bag 2 weeks ago. I highly recommend them for fittings but not purchasing. You'll save big time purchasing off site. The fitting process is hands down the best I've ever done though.

^^^ that’s a really good deal and where I would go...unless, of course, you really like whoever you already planned on doing your fitting

I'd rather not get fitted indoors on a mat for irons. The guy I'm going to has as many and pretty much as good of reviews as Club Championship. He's at TCUs home course and is a consultant for them. True outdoor fitting as well.
I'll obviously still price everything out and just pay for the fitting if it makes sense, but everything I've read is its cpmaprable on price since there's not fee if you buy through him.

I really need to do this. The last set I bought just kinda fell into my lap in a deal I could not refuse. While pretty, they are all wrong for me.

What I would suggest you do is tell them if you have any type of preference, but also make it clear you're open to whatever is the best for you. And, in doing so don't have them tell you what you're hitting. Club heads will be somewhat obvious, but let them evaluate you and start inter-changing shafts and heads etc. Just let them hand you club and shaft combinations and watch the changes to the ball flight dispersion, etc.
To me that is the best way to get truly fitted and takes any pre-conceived notions out of it. They will be able to narrow it down and will probably run you through best combos for you again towards the end.

I'm familiar with the process and know what I'm looking at. I've hit balls on a track man plenty of times. I really just wanted to know approximate price because my last two sets I've gotten for dirt cheap from guys that play college or pro golf when they got new irons.

I kind of agree with this, but this

Could take a long time needlessly. It only took 15 minutes to find the right club and shaft for me, because we knew where we were starting and wanted to see. Also, the fitter knew my length and lie just by looking at me. (the numbers confirmed it)
I will say though I am quite different than a normal golfer. I wanted forgiveness, but needed help getting the ball DOWN. odd combination. That narrowed the search to only a few clubs.

Mizuno fitting they have you take like 3 smooth swings with a 6 iron. It has a device that measures your Clubhead speed, Swing temp, Toe down, Kick angle and Release factor. An App they use recommends the top 5 shafts for your swing. From there you can try different Clubheads. That could save a ton of time if you don't have a good starting point. Mizuno also offers almost all shafts and grips as a free upgrade.

When i originally got fitted for my irons, they used the Mizuno device. Recommended me into Project X 6.0 120g shafts. When I went to ClubChampion, we tried 5 different iron shafts to see if any results were better. They weren't. I'd give that Mizuno device a thumbs up based on my experience.

I might suggest checking with Discount Dan's. They are based out of Oregon (no sales tax) and are direct distributors with the manufacturers so their prices are dirt cheap in comparison. I order new clubs from them every year and have never had issues. If you know roughly what you want, they will give you a quote that is good for a month or so. They will be able to tell you the price of the irons with whatever shafts you're looking at, then you can go back with specs once you get fitted. They will be built by the manufacturer and not an aftermarket club builder, but unless you're playing to low single digits you probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference.
