How did Trevino, Nicklaus, Palmer, and Sam Snead have their clubs fitted back in the day?

I wonder what the fitting process was like back then.

Those dudes went out and shot in the 60's hitting butter knives .

I would of loved to take a prime Nicklaus, throw him into 2019 and give him modern clubs with a pro v1. The dude would think golf was a joke .

How did they fit players in the 50's and 60's?

Courses that were 1500 yards shorter

Higher winning scores

Talent

Today’s players could play those clubs if they grew up with them like the baws back then did

And their fitting consisted of buying them off the rack

Green speeds were also much different back in the day, I wouldn't be surprised if they were around 5 back in those days.

Here are green speeds from a survey taken in 1978:
Harbour Town, 5-1 (5 feet, 1 inch)
Congressional, 6-4
Merion, 6-4
Pinehurst No. 2, 6-10
Pebble Beach, 7-2
Shinnecock Hills, 7-2
Pine Valley, 7-4
Winged Foot, 7-5
Cypress Point, 7-8
Medinah, 7-8
Augusta National, 7-11
Oakland Hills, 8-5
Oakmont, 9-8

Not to say it's not impressive what they did back in the day, but it wasnt the same game as today.

Not sure when it started, but if you watch any of Mizuno Golf Europe's videos with Nick Faldo he knew enough in the 80s to change his clubs. He would get them built a certain way and get multiple sets to pull from. The clubs weren't mass produced for the guys you are referring to here. They didn't have some of the scientific metrics but they had to people to work with their preferences at least for Hogan and Nicklaus. Hell, Don White who made Nicklaus McGregor clubs is still making clubs, but for National Custom.

Today's clubs and balls even out the playing field. Tiger has talked about this often. He was a better driver of the golf ball with small heads, steel shafts, and balata balls. Putting Jack in today's tech would give the field a better chance, not the other way around.

Yep. You don't have to be a premier ball striker to win on tour. You give today's golfers 1960s equipment and Tiger Woods would be untouchable.

thats a good take, hes right.

Reverse I believe the opposite happens, old guys lap the field with old equipment.

Not exactly true.

The top players would test a few different one off persimmon woods and bend loft and lie on their own irons

You make it sound like it was easier to putt those greens than greens of today.

Because it would be. Everything inside 10 feet would be hit with authority vs trying to die if in the hole and if it misses rolling another 3-4 feet by.

Have you seen the greens back in the day??? It’s light years easier to make putts on today’s greens.

And their greens held the ball better

And they could be more aggressive at the hole because they didn’t have to worry about hitting it 20 feet past

And they played from the men’s tees

That’s not a real fitting though. Hickory shafts were different from one to the next and they would break eventually. And since it was homemade work, I would bet there were some non-conforming clubs (if there was such a thing back then)

Today’s pros would rather putt on super fast greens. Ball holds its line better.

The line is the line. It might be different whether the green is quick or not, but the smoothness is what matters to the ball going where you hit it

Back in the day we used to put tape on our irons to see where we were hitting it on the clubface, try different shafts and hit off boards to see if the toe or heel were dragging. I was fitted in the mid 70's and am not much different now with the irons. All the repairs guys in BR on Airline (Ed's) & Florida Blvd (Pro-Line) had a vise, so we would constantly bend the irons until they fit perfect. Goodness knows how many shafts I bent over the years. Hogan & Sneed did it the same way by trial & error. Woods were much more difficult because you could have 3 Persimmon drivers exactly alike and they would all hit different. Again, it was a matter of trying the different woods and shafts to get the best combination. Then Ping came along with a fitting system and then Graham Pilsh (Shreveport) and James Leitz from Slidell were the first golf professionals in the world to start properly fitting golfers as they do today. James is the leading expert in the world!! If you talk to James I'm sure he has a lot of old war stories on fitting for sure.
