How did they fit clubs in the 60's and 70's?

Did they just go off of feel and off-the-rack stuff?
I wonder what, if any, processes made up the equipment fitting process back then...
Dudes still shooting in the 60's to win majors with that equipment nonfit with any type of monitor or tech.

In Jack's heyday you had some master clubmakers like Don White with McGregor.
