Never offered an excuse. I ate the penalty, I just provided context on how it happened and my thought on how it is a stupid rule.

It provides no advantage to a player....everyone gets put back into the same position they were in prior to the strike...there is no intent. Many of the rule changes that have taken place have been predicated on no intent. For example, contact with ball in practice swing, double hits....all used to be penalties.

I ate it.....I just think it is a dumb rule, but most seem to disagree.

You did the right thing. I play in a Sunday money round every week. They are sticklers for certain rules. I agree with most rules but disagree with a few. But, we all agree on the rules before the round and you agree to play by the rules. I've started marking a line around my ball with a line marking tool. It's pretty easy to mark, you know your ball is marked with the line and it's visible any way you look at it. Nobody else marks their ball that way in my group. Lesson learned.

I may get downvoted to hell for my opinions here, but my least favorite rule is having to play out of a divot. Doesn't come up real often, but divots aren't avoidable hazards and increases the chance of a bad hit a lot. I dislike the rule even at the PGA level. My group also doesn't allow you to remove a ball from a footprint in the sand trap. And municipal courses, people are terrible about raking the traps. None of us are good enough to be making highly skilled shots with perfect lies, let alone low percentage lies.

In the end, I'd rather lose playing by the rules than win by cheating the rules.

“Animal activity”

I’ll try to find the rule, but a human is an animal.

I was wrong

“ abnormal course condition is any of these four things – Animal hole, ground under repair, immovable obstruction or temporary water. Unfortunately a footprint is none of these things so no relief is available through that Rule.”

Basically, you are subject to the laziness of who is playing there.

I wish somebody at the Masters would just not take a bunker and Tiger had to play out of a footprint.

Not going to happen.

The divot rule should remain as is, but, if you’re not playing a tournament, do whatever the hell you want to make the game enjoyable

If the tournament allows everyone to use slope it should be their business..the usga needs to just allow the slope because there is no way to police it and anything that speeds up play should be encouraged

I'm more or less more accepting of it at the PGA level. I don't like it, but I also like to watch professionals struggle.

The round we play in is for money, so can't really do whatever the hell we want. I just wish the rule was changed.

Someone explained that it'll cause bickering over what constitutes a divot. How deep does the divot have to be, is the ground being barely scraped allow for you to move your ball. . . etc. I get it. Ultimately not a huge issue in the grand scheme of things. Just a mild annoyance.

In other friendly money rounds, I'm generally more generous with courtesies like moving your ball off rocks even if you're out of the fairway, or getting away from roots. Whatever the obstacle is, it's not worth jeopardizing your clubs or your wrists to hit a shot. Just move it to where you have a comparable lie without the obstruction.

It literally is. If the local rule isn’t in effect, everyone can use slope.

And there’s no way to police the majority of rules. If someone wants to cheat in golf, they’re going to do it

Easy fix to that argument is to always allow a scorecard bump n the fairway only.
