Just ordered a hitting mat for some back yard practice and wanted to hear everyones opinion on the setup. I already have a net I'm happy with and plenty of area.

My back yard is a thick St. Augustine grass. I'm predicting that if I just set the mat down, it's not going to lie flat with the thick grass underneath. After a week it will probably kill the grass and level out a bit, with a few high and low spots. I'm looking for a nice level surface that I can just practice on.

Would you guys recommend leveling out a spot with some sand? Big 24" square concrete pavers under the mat? What's the typical setup?

What I'm thinking is leveling with sand then the big pavers so that I'm above the grass alittle bit which will make weed eating etc easier round the mat. Am I going to regret putting it directly on the concrete pavers?

How large is the hitting mat?

I’d definitely do the sand and pavers if it’s a permanent install. I would add a stall mat between the pavers and hitting mat for the extra cushion.

I was never confident hitting in my net until I got a launch monitor to give me feedback. Hitting in the net without the launch monitor always left me unsure of what I felt off the club was real. Just trying to help you spend some more cash.

3'x5' country club elite mat. I've heard good things and it's running $250 at costco.

That's a down the road item for me. I'm still fairly new to golf and I think I just need to get more swings in. In doing so I'm absolutely murdering my grass.

My plan is that when I'm consistently breaking 90 to get a Garmin R10 so that I can get some more realistic practice in at home.

Build you a wood platonic and then glue the mat to it. Wood will give a little more than concrete.

Could set platform on pavers. Use treated lumber.

1) weed eat the current grass down to the dirt

2) spray the area with roundup and wait 7 days

3) install black landscape fabric on prepped area

4) use rumble wall blocks, they are rectangle in shape, create a border with them running horizontally. They are extremely cheap at places like Jim stone etc

5) put down a few bags of 610 limestone and wet.

6) pack limestone with a hand temper and make sure it's level

7) put a 1/4 of #8 limestone on top of 610 base and use hand temper again

8) place your mat onto gravel area and secure with sod staples, very easy to knock in the ground with a hammer

The rock border will allow you to weed eat area easily and provide a secure border for your hitting surface.

I have the Bushnell Launch Pro. Only had it a few weeks, but love it. Using it outdoors off a mat and into a net at the moment with a gaming laptop.

My suggestion is don’t wait until you break 90. Get a couple lessons. Like 2-3 and then use a launch monitor to consistently practice what you learn so you can understand your ball flight which tells you more than anything unless you are still swing and missing right now lol
