Birmingham has Ross Bridge, Oxmoore and Farmlinks (about 1hr away). Great trip.
Cambrian Ridge and Capital Hill are close to each other. Again, quality courses.
Never made it to Grand National yet but heard nothing but good about them.
I even think Magnolia Grove is great.

I played Pointe Royale last year since we were staying at a condo on one of the holes. It was a pretty decent course. My only complaint was there was no driving range. It had a hitting net to warm up.

Bandon Dunes is my personal favorite but if your looking for something close both dancing rabbit and grand bear are solid
