Played in a 4-man tournament in Shreveport. We were the next to last group. I knocked one stiff on a par 3 (3-5 ft) and signed closest to the pin card. We pulled over to watch the final group where they couldn't see us. None of the four hit the green. So I go into the clubhouse and was waiting to get my new Vokey wedge. The group behind us won the wedge. It was a preacher. I said aloud, if you cheat on the golf course no telling what you are doing with the offering plates.

I beat him by 23 shots the first time we played 18 holes together lol. This was when I worked at the golf course. This guy was telling everybody he was the best golfer in the cart barn. Put a stop to that talk.

I'm pretty relaxed about the rules when I'm just hitting them around with buddies. I see it all and don't care too much. But when we're calling out scores and someone consistently shaves a stroke on holes throughout the round, I really hate it. Roll your ball, get a nice lie, fricking pull it out of the bunker if you have to. But record the true number of "strokes."
When I know someone shoots double claims a bogey, it bugs me. Especially if I carded a legit bogey. frick that.

I play casually (no money) and usually improve my lie by a ball or two, I think I picked it up playing as a kid. I never thought it was a big deal. Is it really? I'm not sure my group really knows the rules, so I follow them as much as they do.

I see you stated playing casually for no money, but in any event you should discuss with the group prior to teeing off to make sure every one is on the same page. Some people play it as it lies, some will allow a scorecard of wiggle room, etc.
