Did anyone catch this program last night about Jean Van de Velde's epic meltdown in the 1999 British Open in Carnoustie?
I remember watching it live, and it was interesting to see the program and hear Van de Velde describe it after so many years.
They also spoke with his caddie.
For any older golf fans, I'd give it a watch next time around.

I watched it last night and thought it was great. I remember seeing it when I was a kid but didn't really understand what happened at the time. I always assumed he choked but after watching it, I'd say he got incredibly unlucky. Needing double bogey at the last if he doesn't get that horrific bounce off the grandstand he wins easily. Obviously just don't hit the grandstand and you don't have to worry about that, but it was still unfortunate.

I had the exact same thoughts as you, that he had choked. I too, re-evaluated some of my former opinions, but I still think taking driver off the tee was the wrong choice.

I agree with that, but once he got away with it I'm okay with the two iron. I'd think just hit it up there around the green, chunk it on the green even if you're in the thick stuff and give yourself three putts for the win. I like that strategy. Even if his second is bad and goes in the berm he still can chip on and two putt for the win. What no one saw coming was hitting the hand rail then the rocks and going 50 yards backwards into the hay. Brutal break.
On another note, I was amazed with how relaxed he is about the whole situation. Doesn't seem like it's affected him at all

Yep, I really admire his entire attitude about the incident. A lesser man could have been broken by the events.
On another note, I found the narration by the bartender to be a cheesy way to present the show.

4 iron, 4 iron, wedge, two putt FTMFW!

His thought process made sense in clearing the water and getting up and down in 2-3 from there, but seems like the really safe play (after getting away with a bad driver and the decision to even hit driver) was to wedge up in front of water, hit green in 3 and 2 putt.

Outside of the bar scenes, which I thought were cringeworthy, it was great.
What’s kind of weird to think about is in hindsight if his ball would have gone off the railing into the water, he would have been in better shape. I definitely remembered it as a choke as well, and even though it kind of was, it was a whole lot more bad luck than I remembered.

Yep. I don't know what they were thinking there?
