Getting started: Do taller guys need special/longer clubs?

I’m 6’5” and do not have a set of clubs. I’ve only practiced putting and hit the driving range previously.
Purchase a standard, used set or do I need a club fitting? Buddy of mine swears taller guys need special clubs - longer shafts I assume. I just figured arm length would offset this a little.
There is a Second Swing Golf store in my area that offers fittings for $150 or free with purchase of a set. Recommend checking this out or just renting standard clubs for my first few trips to the course?

It’s more about arm length and your stance. It’s probably best if you get fitted, but if you don’t want to spend the money, getting a lie board can help you see if standard length is right for you.

There are a number of factors that contribute. I’m 6’4 and always used handed down clubs which were +1” but when I finally got fitted they were standard length. All that really matters is whatever you are comfortable with.
My advice to you is find a set of decent used clubs (probably +1”) and learn how to play before going out and spending 2k+ on fitted clubs when you dont really know how to swing yet because odds are it will change a lot as you get better.

I’m 6’3” and use +1” clubs, but know guys my height that use standard or +0.5.

It depends. Your wrist to floor measurement should determine your club length, not your height.

Thanks guys.
Wrist to floor is 38” (barefoot)
I just found a chart online that recommends +1” for this measurement and height.
When shopping used clubs is this length way less common than say a standard set or should I easily be able to find a decent set?

Online you shouldn’t find any problems. Only thing you really would need +1” for is your irons and between sites like Callaway Pre-Owned, Global Golf, and Ebay you should be able to find a quality set of players improvement irons for relatively cheap

Make sure sizing chart you use accounts for being barefoot.

I'm 6'5" as well and use +0.5" clubs. I got into golf ~3 years ago and bought a set off the rack. Later got fitted with the longer shafts and you can tell the difference in ball contact.
With the standard length, I'd often "sweep" the ball and was very prone to thinning it. Idk my wrist-to-floor measurement to see how similar we are, but I'd be willing to bet a lot of money that you need to be in longer shafts.

6’2 and irons are +.5 inches and 2 degrees upright. My dad 6’5 played with a set in the 80s and 90s that were and inch over standard 2-5 iron and his 6-SW were the all 6 Iron length

Do a fitting. No matter skill level, being correctly fit will help you to get into what you need
