I bought a launch monitor, net, and mat to practice in my shop. Was hitting it really well on the launch monitor but it wasn’t translating to the course.
Took a lesson with a pro in Dallas and trackman showed him that my low point control wasn’t very good for someone with my index. He gave me a drill that I can do on the mat, with or without a simulator.

Put a strip of painters or masking tape on the mat and put the ball on the target side edge of the tape. Hit some half wedges/short irons. If you’re bottoming out behind the ball, the tape will come loose from the mat. Ideal low point with irons would be several inches in front of the ball. If you don’t have a net, you can use those foam balls instead of real balls. Hope this helps.

TLDR low point control is king

Merry Christmas, Golf Board.

Michael Johnson (not the Olympian).
He has a studio at his house…we have a mutual friend.

Bryson had that tape deal in one of his videos. Said like 8 or 10 out of 20 for 10ish handicap. Said a high handicap will want to figure it out quick because the taping will get old fast.

Great tips. Low Point control is essential. It’s something I spent all year on and it’s paying off. If you can control the low point, you hit a bunch of shots pin high and even if you misjudge the wind or something, your low point control can help you get up and down from anywhere.

Wedge selection is also key. I started the year with an old school Vokey w 4 degrees of bounce and I ended the year with a Callaway MD5 60 w 8 degrees of bounce and a thicker grip (prevents pulls and hooks). I went from a 30 handicap wedge player to a scratch level chipper/flopper/pitcher in a matter of months.

The final boss for me is bunker play. To hit a good bunker shot, it kind of goes against all of the low point training I did this year. I find myself catching the ball far too clean out of green side bunkers.

Just towards the end of this year I decided to try moving the ball back 2 balls worth in my stance and swing the same aiming in front of it. Since I'm a picker and was making contact at the bottom of my swing, doing that alone has helped me a lot when I do it right.
