Distance vs Fairways hit question

Would you rather hit a 3 wood 220-230 and miss one or two fairways a round or hit a driver 260-280 and miss 4-5 fairways per round?

Depends on the definition of “missed fairway”
1. OB or hazard?
2. Deep penal rough?
3. First cut?
1. And 2. Really define round.
3. No big deal.
All in all, hitting it further is usually an advantage.

Give me the driver and distance.

At least 1 OB usually. Most of the time it’s a punch out or deep rough. Of the missed fairways it almost always costs me an extra stroke minimum.

The 3 wood fairways missed are second cut.... not lost balls or punch outs.

Driver and distance all day

Give me the 40-50 extra yards. All day, every day.

on sunday i shot 35/40
on the front i should have been -2 or -3. hit fairways, hit greens, shot well. just don't know how to putt, never have.
back nine i didn't hit a single fairway. had to scrammble every hole practically, should have shot 38. dicked off on the last hole and got a double.
but the point is if im in the fairway all round, then i'm going low.
but i hit my 3wood 240-250 off the tee, so that would be how i would play it.
with all this in mind, i play for fun and never put the driver away. i wanna hit bombs bro.

Hahaha that’s my exact problem. When i’m in the fairway, my normal group is in trouble. When i’m not, it’s a long day lol. I haven’t met a 3 wood i can hit 250. I have a x2hot that’s always strait but 220-230 is all i can get out of it.

I'm a firm believer in driver. This has been discussed a lot in a lot of different places and people come down on different sides. If I'm playing a very tight hole with no bunkers and I'm just trying to land a ball in the fairway, I'm hitting driver (maybe 3i). I don't practice 3w enough to be comfortable with it off the tee. I'm more likely to spray it than I am driver. Not to mention the distance I gain with driver.
My question is if you hit 3w straight, but not driver, have you been fit for the driver?

With modern drivers, the sweet spot is huge so the misses a not as bad as in the 1970s.
A 3 wood will not magically save an over the top move or a Mishit of any nature.
Hit driver unless there is serious trouble at that distance for you.
The driver is the new 3 wood according to some research.

For whatever reason, i hit the 3 strait every time. Driver is 50/50

Modern 3 woods have a big sweet spot relative to the head as well. They've also got shorter shafts, thus more control.
I'd rather the distance. I'm not good enough yet that a fairway lie will drastically improve my approach shot over first or second cut lie. I learned how to hit my irons on a closed driving range so I've got a lot more strokes under my belt from a rough lie than a fairway lie.

Depends on the tees you play to be honest.
If you play around 6400-6500 yards, the 3 wood is plenty. You'll hit 7 iron or less into almost every par 4; the down side is you're not reaching par 5s in 2.
If you push out closer to 7,000 yards, you'll need to hit driver to combat the longer par 4s on the card.
