My youngest son and I have dabbled at playing golf for a couple of years. He has played baseball and football in high school, so he never really pursued golf. He is heading out to Auburn (yeah, I know) in a couple of weeks and says he wants to play more golf since he won’t be playing ball anymore. That’s a lot of info to ask, what would you suggest for clubs for him? I tried to research and I just don’t know what I don’t know. I’m guessing @ 1K budget?? Less if I could get away with it.

Wilson launchpad irons.

Some of the easiest irons to hit out there.

He probably has good swing speed.
May benefit from stiff shafts.

Go have him hit some in a bay at Edwin Watts.

Without knowing his handicap and assuming it's high, the Callaway Rouge ST Max irons are supposed to be good for beginners according to reviews. You can pickup a used set from Callaway Preowned for about $600 - $900 depending on condition.

Costco has the Callaway Edge set that I used when I started. Pretty good quality for the price. Definitely the best of the starter sets. Will still need to get him a bag. He can fill the bag in with wedges/long irons/other hybrids and fairway woods when he gets the chance.

Mizuno JPX 919 or 921 Hot Metal line for irons and wedges

Ping G400 drivers, woods, hybrids

You could probably put that together under $1000, then get him a good $2-300 putter for Christmas.

You should have plenty of options with a $1K budget. Some TaylorMade Sims, Calloway Rogues, ect. would probably work best. I would take him to an Edwin Watts, Golf Galaxy, or Dicks and ask them and let him hit a few different types. They should be able to point you in the right direction.

He and I both have hacked some for a year or so, played maybe 6-8 times. Who knows what an 18 year old will stick with. He has played ball since he was 5, I just want to give him an opportunity if he wants it to stay busy/active

If the $1,000 isn't a big deal for you, it'll be worth it. Even if him and his friends just go once a month, it will be put to good use. $1,000 set of clubs can easily last him a decade, which will be very useful after he graduates as well.

The new ping irons are really good

I would consider looking on Callaway pre-owned site. We bought both of our boys their first sets from there are a fraction of the cost.

Not to mention they looked like they have never been hit. Great value

Also 2nd swing really has some decent stuff as well

Just took a glance for you on their website, I would assume a stiff shaft would be appropriate for him and probably you as well.

They quite a few iron sets in like new condition between $550 and $750, You get a really good value buying used from Callaway. They have pretty much any model you can think of available
