Vice Pro - Overall rating - dogshit. It’s good to put in a shag bag,

That's the thing about "fitting." Different golfers play different clubs that match/fit their specific game. Golf balls are the same. The Vice Pro is the softer ball. The Vice Pro Plus is the more firm ball, like the Tour X balls. I have a slower swing speed and the Vice Pro, and other softer balls, give me good results. I get plenty of spin around greens. I do not get a ton of distance, but I never have been a long hitter (220-230 carry).
Just say ... "This one doesn't work for me." According to a lot of review site (MyGolfSpy, etc.) the Vice golf ball line is highly regarded.

According to my launch monitor my average carry with a driver is 233. Every other soft cover line I hit better, and I’ve tried everything but Wilson and Maxfli balls. I’m not going to rip it 15 feet back anymore, but I’d sorta like a 58 to be within a foot of where it lands, or back up just a bit. This ball just won’t do it, and I hit multiple balls from the same spot in these tests.

You say it your way, I say it mine. It takes a lot for me to say something is dogshit.

It’s that bad. I’m not sure Noodle isn’t better. I haven’t been desperate enough to hit those.

Played this morning at 7:05am, it took a couple of hours to break the scar tissue loose lol...

Just to refresh, I have been playing the ProV1x for a while now.

Today testing was Maxfli Tour on the front and Chrome Tour on the back..

I drove the ball better today and that's a reason that I wanted to try the Maxfli Tour again. It's a solid ball all around. For me, it's not as long as the Chrome Tour off the tee, but it performs great on short shots and putts.

The Maxfli Tour is probably the best bang for the buck ball out there.

Chrome Tour - Callaway spent millions developing this ball and it doesn't disappoint. It's great off the tee , short shots spin really well and it's a tad softer off the putter.

Bottom line, the Chrome Tour is a "Complete Ball" for my game, it has no shortcomings. It sits in the mid 80's compression wise.

Right now my test rankings are :

1. Chrome Tour ( by a lot)
2. Maxfli Tour
3. TM Tour Response ( a little mushy)

Balls that didn't make the cut - QStar Tour, Vice Pro, Vice Pro Plus, BRX .

Next week, I am testing the Srixon Z Star against the Chrome Tour with a strong emphasis on performance off the deck with a fairway wood.

Very interested in how this comes out. I keep looking at the Z Star on the shelves.

In my opinion, judging a ball off a fairway wood should be essential.

Today's balls and fairway woods are so low spin, I can't settle on a ball that I hit only bullets with.

You’re probably right, but I rarely hit them. I’ve got a much better chance at making birdies from 220 out hitting 8 iron then a 58. Too much trouble around the greens here and getting on the wrong side of the ridges purely sucks.

For me it’s scoring clubs, 50, 53, 58 wedges. If the ball isn’t responding well for those clubs, it’s hard to put it in the bag

Holy hyperbole. Vice's aren't dog shite and perform very well for me. I have no problem ripping them back with the wedges and have plenty of check around the green. Overall sentiment online and my playing group is the performance very good for the price point with ProVs being the standard. I cruise around 112-115 and can get 118-119 when really warm for reference. Like I've said in previous threads the previous generation covers were lackluster with regards to durability but the current generation has seemed to solve that issue.

Yes, it depends on the course. We hit a lot of fairway woods off the tee and the deck on the courses we play.

I still think that I can get home on the par 5's.. my ego gets the best of me sometimes.

I hit my irons and wedges high anyway.

I didn't think the Vice balls that I tried were bad. But for me to go through the hassle of mail orders, they needed to perform really special for me.

Don't mean to be an arse but, maybe it's you?
You need to match your ball with your swing speed.
Vice Pro works for me. Decent distance. Stops within 2-3 feet.
63 y/o. 10 hdcp. 103 mph swing speed. 81 avg score.

24 pack at SAMs for $50. Hard to beat. The Maxfli Tour is also awesome. 48 pack for $110.

I'm done. Hit'em well.

“If you’re a low/mid handicap golfer, have a swing speed between 95-110 MPH, and want a solid mix of distance and greenside spin, the Vice Pro could be one worth checking out.
It wasn’t the longest ball I’ve ever hit. It didn’t produce the most greenside spin. But considering the price (especially if bought in bulk), it’s one of the best-valued balls on the market.”
– outofbounds.com

“The numbers speak for themselves, these balls can keep up with the best of them and the Vice Pro is very competitive with the Pro V1. One area that isn’t accounted for in Flightscope data is feel.  While this is subjective to each golfer’s preferences, these are softer feeling than their comparable counterparts.  They are lower compression balls which offer great feel, yet maintain enough firmness to not get that mushy or dead feeling.”
–independentgolfreviews.com

“With good durability, all-round performance and three colour options in each, this trio of Vice Golf Pro balls offers a more than reasonable alternative at a modest price, especially if you buy in bulk – which is always advised as it improves consistency compared to switching models every round.
Impressive all round durability and performance, especially comparable to well-known, market leading premium models around the greens in terms of spin control.”
-golfmonthly.com

“The golf balls come in at a fair price and last for many rounds of play. When you look at how long these golf balls last with the low initial price, they are a very good overall value. However, you will have to make some trade-offs in spin and feel compared to the Vice Pro range. score: 4.7/5”

Age 62, 100 mph swing speed (I can get to 104 if I push it), 4 hcp. So we’re not that far apart.

Depending on the kind of greens you play it might work fine. Here at Capital Hill most of the time you’re aiming at sections of the greens and not at the pins. They’re hard, fast and twisty. Releasing 2-3 feet turns into 20 feet real quick.

I’ve tried a number of balls, the Vice Pro is literally the only one to go uphill from 75 yards with my 58. Did it multiple times and definitely cost me strokes. The Taylor Made Ink doesn’t spin well, and consistently was within 6 inches of where it landed. It’s also noticeably shorter than every other ball I’ve tried.

People don’t have to like my opinion, they’re free to compare it against other balls and write their own.

We can all agree different balls may work or not work for all of us.

Hopefully this thread helps those of us either looking for a new option or just wants to experiment.

Yesterday my group tried the Chrome Tour, 3 of us liked it and 1 hated it.

The one guy that hated it has found his new ball (Tour Response) because we decided to try playing with different balls. He would have never thought to try that ball.

Will there be a summary page?

So far:

Best ball for the money: Maxfli Tour

Gold standard: ProV1

Competition for ProV1:
Chromesoft Tour
Bridgestone BRXS(is that the one?)

Solid golf balls with Urethane covers:
Tour Response

Budget balls that perform well:
TM Ink
Bridgestone E12

Do not use: Snell

I believe that you created a good recap. I may use the format for the final.

I am testing 2 more balls this coming week and then I'll be done for this year since I need to settle on one ball because of a upcoming golf trip.

Maxfli tour. There are 2 Tour balls "S" and "X" , which one are you referring too?

ETA: I answered my own question. Thanks

Today - ProV1, logo overruns from the golf superstore that are 39 a dozen instead of 55.

Wanted to make sure those were top quality, they are

Distance - solid, expected nothing less. Couldn’t tell if they were measurably longer or not, rained last night. My 5-iron on #1 on The Judge I had to dig the ball out of the ground it embedded so deeply in the fairway. That was a first.

Approach shot spin - hit a 7 iron on 12, it was 2 inches from where it landed, greens still hard and fast. Good controllable spin on everything. Stuck a 3- wood from 230 that only released about 20 feet.

Around the green - good feel, spins when you need it, trundles out when you don’t

Putting - felt good, good feel resulted in good distance control

The gold standard. I wouldn’t have tested it, but I saw the bowl of logo overruns and thought I’d check it out. Could give folks a cheaper way to play them.

If you asked me if I could hit a ProV1 with possibly a seriously ugly logo or a pristine white Q-Star Tour for the same money, I’m putting the ugly logo on the bottom when I’m teeing off or putting and swinging away.

FWIW,

I had previously tried the Maxfli Tour S and did not like it. Definitely shorter than I'm use to.

So are our finalist ProV1 versus Chrome Tour?

Maybe we need some other golfers to try both of those as a separate thread.

Premium ball test thread

Discount ball test thread: TM ink, Bridgestone E12,

This thread was a great idea.
After club championship, I’ll test some others like the Wilson lineup. I’ve heard good things about some of their golf balls.
