I thought by this point you could at less message friends on the list. We had it for the WiiU right? Granted that was MiiVerse.
Yes, the app blah blah but it is dumb.

I’m sure the Switch fanboys will be in here shortly to tell you that the friends list’s primary purpose is maintain World Peace, cure cancer and lastly keep you connected with your friends whom also own a system.

Nintendo is working on an initiative in which the friends list gradually cures any cancers in your friends while also using the waste from that process to generate crops to feed starving kids in Africa.
It also provides a great way to keep in touch with others that own the console.

I feel list connected to other ppl on the switch than I do on my 3DS and did on the WiiU.
How ridiculous?

All I know is Skyrim is still $60 on switch and WTF Nintendo?

I mean they've never advertised it as anything grand. It's there for easy access to people you want to play with in online games like Mario Kart, Splatoon, etc. Even when we could send messages on older systems, I never did. That's just not the purpose a Nintendo console has ever served for me. I don't really understand expecting more out of Nintendo in this regard. It's clearly not a priority or a necessity to them. I don't need a fully functional friends list and messaging system to get the most out of zelda and mario.

Was laying in bed last night wishing Earthbound was on the Switch so I could play in bed. Which is odd because I actually hate it in handheld, my hands are to large and I don't have crazy big hands.
So went grab it and was looking for another RPG. Could not believe Skyrim is still $60.

I get that but the point you CAN NOT communicate with friends blows me away.
The feature was previously there for 2 gens right? We had it on the WiiU but not sure about the Wii.

This is dumb.
So what if a buddy I only talk to in game. I can't message them saying lets play some Mario Kart or Splatoon?
They have to be in game.
You might of not done it on an Nintendo console but how have you never done it on Battlenet, Steam, PSN, etc?

It's easy as frick to join a friend on Mario Kart. If they're on, you hit online and click join. Boom you're in a game with your friend. You asked what the point of the friends list is, there you go.
quote:When did I ever include any other platform? I said I don't need a friends list to get the most out of Zelda, Xenoblade, Mario, etc. Nintendo is vastly a single-player endeavor for me. Any online games I play on a Nintendo console with people, I didn't meet them on the game so I have other avenues of communication with them outside of the console. So if we want to play we just use one of the 4 million other ways to contact another human in this day and age.

Nintendo consoles have never been a good online social console. Acting surprised now just seems weird.

Understand but this is the point of a friends list.
Coyote: "Sup?"
Drewbie: "Nothing, bored"
Coyote: "Let me hit this line then we play some Kart?"
Drewbie: "Sounds good"
Coyote: "Ready? I have 15mins until another one. Lets play the Bell Cup"
Drewbie: "You sure?"
Coyote: "Yep"
That is what a friends list is for, especially if you only see someone in game.

So say I see you online and know you play say Mario Kart but you aren't on Mario Kart. But would love to play against say someone you know (not IRL but not PUB). I would need to come here, go to you on Battlenet or Steam.
Its silly.
You must see the short comings in this? ESP now that they charge us for online play.

quote:That's the point of a messaging system. The point of the friends list is what I mentioned earlier. For easier access into games with each other and to broadcast to your friends what you are playing. Is there even an online Nintendo game with any kind of communication implemented that isn't some 3rd party thing like the hook-up voice chat? It's obviously not a priority at any level.
Understand but this is the point of a friends list.
I understand wanting Nintendo to provide things that seem standard by the other console's standards, but I think it's pretty clear by now that Nintendo is playing by their own rules. Because of that, my views and expectations for them differ. Idk, this just doesn't seem like anything noteworthy to me. Just Nintendo being Nintendo.

quote:This changes things and I'm sure we'll get more implementation of features as they continue to develop this, but my expectations for anything regarding online interaction from Nintendo are non-existent. Like I said before, it's just not something I ever actively needed or wanted out of that specific console.
ESP now that they charge us for online play.

There is no messaging system. There is nothing.
They charge us now. Those standards should be available but aren't currently.
Yes it is cheaper but Kart and Splatoon still do not have dedicated servers right? Now we come up on the launch of Smash. Still no dedicated servers probably.
Plus a lack of the "standards" we had previously for free on 2 other gens.

quote:Like I said, I never even used it when it was available. So I'm not really missing it that much. Nintendo has always been more focused on the single-player and local multiplayer aspects of gaming. I don't buy a Nintendo console for online play and social interaction. That's what my ps4 and computer is for. That's really my point. I understand the issues people might have that want the Nintendo to be their all-in-one console like the other two, but I never have expected that. Sure, not being able to send messages from the console could potentially be annoying for those more socially active on the console, but do you really have anyone added on your switch that you couldn't contact any other way?

Understand this but what are we paying for with online pay?
We still host fckking games. No dedicated servers, no local voice or messaging systems.
It is pretty god damn criminal.
Edt: They are charging us to PHP.

It isn't about being socially active. I want be using as a chat but just to contact. Friends list is useless.

I thought all the voice chat stuff got fixed? I've heard Fortnites works really well. You're definitely not wrong that there really should be some simple way of messaging people even if it required the Phone App to do it.

Its like 18games only on NES.
Not even the best ones. It is terrible. Plus it puts a stupid overlay on screen.
Edt: Its not the main draw. I subscribed just because of Mario Party Online play. Fun to play against humans instead of the computer.
