Finally beat DS3 and started playing this. First boss is a beast. What’s the goal in the second phase? Parry or deflect? Dude beats my arse in that second phase.

Focus on parrying/deflecting the red attacks and then when he has like half his health left, use your divine beast ability when prompted on the screen (Triangle + Circle on PlayStation) and it instantly ends the fight.

Also make sure your morale level is at or above the boss's when you enter the fight.

Thank you both. I guess I will see how it goes tomorrow. I can smoke his arse down quickly in the first phase, but the second phase has been a bitch. Blocking and deflecting it is.

Don't get too passive, though.

Use your Spirit Attack (Y or Triangle) liberally. Hitting enemies with this attack lowers the amount of Spirit damage you have to do in order to stagger them.

I got more aggressive and started spamming a combo ending with a Spirit Attack and smoked him.

If you're struggling with Wo Long bosses, a YouTuber named Fuzzy Bearbarian has pretty good videos explaining how to beat bosses and the techniques to use. I think he's better than FightinCowboy for these kinds of videos because he'll freeze frames to show when to parry and generally provides more step-by-step guidance. If you're more into cheese strats, there's a YouTuber named Tyrannicon who posts some good videos about how to cheese bosses with very little skill.

Here are links to their YouTube channels in case you get stuck on a boss (or if you want to see how to farm Tiger Seals and/or Cups of Cordiality in the early game):

So I haven’t had time to play this yet with so much good shite releasing. Sekiro is my all time favorite game when it comes to specifically its combat. Will this game scratch that same itch? I’ve seen it mentioned a few times as being in the same vein.

I need to get back to Sekiro after this. I stopped to play DS3.

It’s a tier below. It’s definitely not as complex as Sekiro and the combat isn’t as solid. It’s fun so far, but the From games are on a different level. I would let it drop in price. It’s free on GamePass though.

I watch Cowboy's walkthroughs because they're super helpful in making sure you get all the loot and whatnot, but I think Fuzzy is better for the one-off boss videos.

Eh. All it made me do was wanna go back and play Sekiro again. Nothing in its genre touches it.

More than any other FromSoft game, the "click" in Sekiro felt soooo good. It's like you go from "There's no fricking way I'll ever beat this stupid fricking game what a waste of fricking money frick me frick this frick Miyazaki" to "I. AM. A. GOD." with the flick of a switch.

Frick I love that game.

You won't get that feeling from this game. When you die in Wo Long, it feels like the game got cheap, not that you slipped in your execution.

Ape is a check because phase 1 makes turns all the deflecting and parrying you've learned on its head, but then phase 2 brings it back.

When you get back to it, quick tip - you can parry his 3 hit combo that ends with a huuuge downward slash. That will open him up to a critical if you use the Loaded Spear prosthetic tool on his headless neck.

Phase two is easy as hell just get the rhythm of his awkward timing slashes and as you said parry the overhead for an opening for a spear to do massive posture. I think phase one is where people trip on themselves and what the game has drilled into you to this point. Newbies at it still more so being less familiar with identifying what Sekiro bosses demand of you on the fly because ostensively it is the most dark souls boss in the game save an optional late game optional one I won’t spoil.

It’s an odd boss and placement since sunken valley could and likely should be first after genichiro. You can if you’re skilled 100% posture break him without taking a slice of heath, most people though aren’t that especially on a first run it’s way more feasible for them to vitality damage only when sure and only 2 slashes or one ichimonji and they’ll likely vitally kill first phase or he’ll be so low in heath when they posture break.

Team Ninja just dropped a new patch: Full Patch Notes

Aside from a ton of QoL changes (e.g., allowing us to compare gear, fixing the automatic locked-on function when deflecting, increasing drop rates for better gear, showing the collectibles you've found on the map, seeing reinforcement levels in the village, etc.), they also nerfed the first boss
