From what I remember, all ps1 games were BC on the PS3. It was the PS2 games that weren’t.

I can at least confirm that PS1 games play on the original, fat PS3. I just put my copy of Symphony of the Night in mine and it plays fine.
Below is a post from Gamefaqs explaining in more detail, but it claims that all PS1 games are compatible with every PS3 model. There are differences with PS2, though.

Yes. PS3 sucks for speedrunning purposes though. Emulation is definitely behind PSP and the slim PS2.

Doesn't matter. All PS1 games work on all versions of PS3.
The 20GB and 60GB models have full PS2 compatibility and the 80GB models have partial PS2 backwards compat (80%+ of library). None of the other US models have backwards compatibility with PS2.
