You're probably right though. The season pass/loot box/in game currency is much more lucrative.

I've just become too cynical about that model. I blame Destiny.

witcher3 & skyrim are tops.

graphics wise DQ builders was glitchy.

Playing through FF VII again made me realize I'm perfectly fine with some good ole turn based combat if the system is fleshed out and there's a compelling story being told that you can impact.

I really don't think you have to add all the bells and whistles to get a good RPG. They help, but I think sometimes simple is just better. Paper Mario is a good example. TTYD is one of my favorite games ever and it's extremely simple as far as RPG mechanics go, but it's all about the world they created and the story they told.

I’ve come so close to getting into the Witcher series so many times.

As a Souls maniac I’m concerned about the combat being too easy/blah though.

But I agree games like the first 9 FFs, Chrono Trigger, Mana etc were treasures.

However I truly believe the greatest action RPG of our time and possibly all time is coming in about two months.

has anyone recommended shadow of war to the OP yet? it's pretty open world and has RPG elements

also maybe try Nier Automata
