bought the thing around 7 months post launch. ended up having issues with after 1 month it where it wouldnt turn on or respond at all to the power button. Got microsoft to repair it for free. Now it auto shuts off after 5 minutes. Im outside of the warranty so i guess Id have to pay microsoft to fix it? Am I better off selling it as is for whatever and just getting a new unit since this one is a dud?

It's up to you, but I can almost guarantee there is an electronics place that can service your xbox. Most major cities have a couple of mom-and-pop stores that do console repairs. Maybe even try a retro-games store. Just Google for "XBox repair [name of city]" and you'll probably find one.

If you just want to get rid of it, dump it on Craigslist or something. You're not going to get much for it and it's counter-productive to drive out of your way to trade it in or put it up on eBay and ship it to someone. Doing a quick search, most broken XBox consoles are selling for $20.

Actually compare repair vs. buying a used one. They can be found for $150 - $200. No clue what a repair cost would be.
