it really depends on the map and situation.
one thing we all need to work on, is picking the right class for the right situation.

play whatever is most fun and gets you the most points to rank up (IMO this is Medic, but if you are able to repair a Squad's tank you get massive points as well)

for example, if you happen to die, and choose to respawn, and see either someone cappin a flag, respawn as medic/assault to help them, or if you see stout in a tank, respawn as engi to repair his stuff, etc etc

or if you see an enemy tank, respawn as engi to plant mines or recon/assault to use C4

this game requires a lot of adapting and on the fly strategic adjustments
