It's not "what's up there" as much as it is "who" is up here. It's a big city that formed in the middle of land, with mountains to all sides. No Ocean Breeze to carry away the smog, not a whole lot of "normal" breeze because of the mountains, so the smog just sits on top of the city, and goes nowhere.

i've only been to b-ham once and that was on my way to a Alabama baseball game. i don't remember it being like that.
