Little over $1,100, but I got a deal (as in free) on Windows 7.

i thought about building a rig that can run programs like AutoCad, photoshop, and games like bf3. but there's just one problem. i don't know how to do it. what website did you use. i've been told by countless people to go to tigerdirect.com.

Alien can chime in, but we pretty much stick with newegg.com.

Use Newegg.com

Tigerdirect.com SUCKS for regular customers like us. It's better suited for corporations and the like.

As far as how to build a machine, you really just need to start with 2 components: the mother board and the processor.

First question should be whether you want to go with an AMD/ATI or Intel/NVidia system.

Once that's decided, select your processor and a compatible motherboard. Everything else just builds from there.

best buy says the AMD processor work just as good as the intel processors and plus they're cheaper. i don't know what's out right now that can run games like bf3 or crysis 3 with autocad and other heavy programs smoothly. i really don't know what to get cause i don't know the differences between them all.

This should get you started. I'm mainly an Intel/Nvidia guy, so I'm a newb with it comes to AMD models. The reason AMD is cheaper is because they use slightly older technologies in their processors. An Intel processor and a comparable AMD processor will usually preform very similar, however the Intel will usually be very slightly faster.

Anyways, here's links to stuff you could get started with.

Intel i5 Processor

Compatible motherboard

Power Supply

Mid Case

From here, you'd just need RAM, a video card, Hard drive, and a DVD-Rom.

do all you need is common sense to put this together? or is it kinda tedious?

eta: isn't the i7 better than the i5 or is it something that isn't necessary.

Common sense mostly. you can go onto Newegg and visit the public wish lists to see how other people are putting theirs together.

Physically putting it all together is pretty simple, but it is a learning experience. Read all instructions twice before you even touch the components and you should be fine. :)

i7 is uber-the-omg-awesome. i5 is just basically uber. Either way you've got uber. :)

PC gaming has always been more expensive than consoles brah, but you don't need to have a 1K rig to run most games at high settings. People that splurge are most likely getting a powerful rig and future-proofing.

Exactly. I know I don't need all this now, but if I'm going to do it, I'm doing it big, and I won't have to worry about upgrading for quite some time.

Nothing about the recommended settings jump off the page to me. You could probably exceed those with a $500 set-up.

Future-proofing to me, is buying a Mobo that supports the CPU socket of the newer processors, buying a larger PSU incase you want to add another Video-Card, a boot SSD, etc - basically stuff that isn't necessary but will help you out later in the PCs lifespan.
