I know I am almost 4 years late, but I finally bought the Witcher 3. Looks like it is discounted until the end of the day on Xbox One.

Anyone have any tips before I get started playing it?

Is this your first Witcher game? It was my first and I quit after 2 hours of gameplay my first try because I just couldn't get the hang of the combat. I picked it back up later on and put a good 120+ hours into it. So my advice would be just stick it out in the beginning and you'll eventually get the hang of it and love it. It can be a steep learning curve.

To be more specific on the combat issue, you have to have a patient approach. It's not like other button mashers where you sprint into combat willy-nilly. You have to plan your approach, use potions, spells, try to pick off one opponent at a time, etc. And you definitely don't want to pick a fight with someone way above your level, because you WILL be destroyed.

Unless you’re a retard and started on blood and broken bones this shouldn’t happen.

Start the game on normal and adjust difficulty from there. The combat is not hard at all to get down. It can just be somewhat lackluster in terms of what you expected going in.

The Witcher 3 was my first game in the series. It is one ride I wish I could take for the first time again. Enjoy it, don’t speed through it either. Enjoy the monster hunts, Gwent card collecting and also the side missions.

the DLC comes with the GOTY, yes? Definitely be sure to play those as well. They are excellent additions to the base game.

Have fun and keep us updated, it’s a top 5 all-time game, imo.

I played on normal difficulty and had no problem beating enemies 5-6 levels above me. I thought it was a fairly easy game. Haven't tried it yet on one of the harder difficulties.

Thanks for the detailed response

This is my first witcher game so I will definitely take your advice and stick with it. I loved the Darksouls games, so I plan to play at a challenging difficulty once I get a feel for things.

just remember tap B to quick dodge and counter and hold B to roll. the tap B is almost always better unless facing multiple enemies or a boss

Difficulty in Witcher is nowhere near that level. Once you get the fleet footed perk, you can spam dodge for unlimited iframes to the point where every fight is basically a joke outside of a few in the DLC’s. Easy combat is my only gripe with the game though and it’s still extremely satisfying.

Figure out how to slot the abilities you acquire. Swear to God I must have gotten to level 20 before I figured that mutagen crap out.

This is the kind of game I would rather concentrate on the story than to have to focus on challenging gameplay. The story and characters are so good, you don't want to let frustrating gameplay get in the way of that.

Apologies if you are taking it personally, but your complaint is one that was addressed back when the game came out.

The only people who complained about the combat being what led them to stop playing were people looking to complain about something.

It’s been addressed 1,000 times and is not an excuse to put the game down, unless you had no intentions to play it in the first place. You going back and pushing through for 100+ hours proves it was a you problem, not the game.

We're just talking about a game, right?

If you re-read my post I never said it was a problem with the game, so there's really nothing to argue about there. I did say "I couldn't get the hang of the combat," so I thought that was evident. I found the controls clunky when I first picked it up and got tired of it. Maybe I was just burned out because I had just marathoned a couple other RPGs before starting it and just needed a break before diving into another huge world.

Anyways, the OP asked for advice, so that's my advice, which is based on my anecdotal experience. Perhaps OP's experience will be closer to mine than yours, making it solid advice for him.

I played on Blood and Broken Bones and still thought the game was easy past the first prologue section. It was slightly challenging early. The hardest difficulty is Death March though. I sort of wished I had picked it when I reached late game and things were easy on B&BB.

I picked B&BB because I had heard normal difficulty (sword and story) was too easy. Based on my experience that is absolutely the case. Pick B&BB at minimum.

You can adjust the difficulty at any time up or down, so I would suggest aiming higher.

The only negative effect of changing difficulties is it disables difficulty related achievements, if you even care about that sort of thing.

There's is a difficulty mode called "sword and story", the easiest. All you have to do is tap square/a to win

The Hearts of Stone quest line is an absolute must, once you're leveled up some. The story pulls you in and is unforgettable.

Other than that, approach every fight with caution, learn to mix every possible potion you can, keep said potions stocked full in your inventory, craft "school" gear as quickly as you can, and if it looks like something you're approaching will kick your arse- it's going to kick your arse. So when you get close enough to see something's name and life bar, if it has a red skull next to it, retreat with haste.

My son just started playing it as well. The above is the advice I gave him as well. I've played it through beginning to end a half dozen times. By far the most beautifully storied and played game I've ever put my hands on.
